Edge keeps running in the Background

Hi All,

I know ... this is old and usually easy ... turn off "Startup Boost" and "Continue running background apps ..."

I have those off and it always worked they way it supposed to.

All of a sudden Edge keeps running.

Indication for still running comes from Ccleaner, which removes all trackers. All of a sudden I get the message:

(paraphrased) Ccleaner can't clean because Edge is still running ... needs to be forced shut down"

In Task manager I also still see 11 Edge processes going even though Edge is shut off.

Again ... "Startup Boost" and "Background Apps ..." are unchecked in settings.

Any suggestions?

I repaired Edge already and nothing changed. Its updated.

PS: I checked in another machine (Win10), same Edge version ... no problems here ... all Edge processes in Task Manager disappear

when shutting Edge down.

    Bug seems to have been fixed on Edge Beta Version 121.0.2277.4

    Like so many others, I'm having the same problem. That this "bug" has been known about for a while, and the fact that every other browser seems to have mastered the fine art of not continuing to run in the background after it has been closed, I'm wondering if it really is a bug? Microsoft has been trying to force a lot of things on its customers lately, whether it's co-pilot or their nonstop nagging of people to switch from their mail/calendar app to their new outlook alternative, which seems to be almost universally despised to any number of changes which seem to benefit them while taking control away from the user. Yeah, I'm getting more and more cynical of Microsoft these days, so if this issue has been known for a while and has not been dealt with, it makes me wonder if there is a reason for it.

    Hi Bryan,

    yes, I'm wondering too. Especially since it does NOT do this on my other, older Win10 machine ... so it might be an intended thing on Win11 / update.

    Again - to confirm: Edge processes keep running (see in Task Manager), sometimes moving down to background processes, but sometimes even staying on up in main processes ... despite having been closed. All suggested fixes/settings (Edge, Group Editor, Settings, Registry ... exhausted)

    However, not sure if you read my latest post:

    I switched to "InPrivate" windows (set to default-always opens in private from shortcut) and the problem is solved. At the same time it also fixed the annoying dropdown list under the search bar ... gone. (with all other stupid sports, news, weather, gossip links tuned off for a plain gray background)

    I'm a diehard Microsoft man since as a graphic designer I worked for a while in a MAC environment ... it was horrible ... so slow, awkward, silly, senile, junk after two years, un-customizable, a crook-company on top, etc., etc.,

    But lately Microsoft had some marketing changes with more ****, advertisements in already paid-for apps, and the annoying helicopter/hovering big brother "Nanny" features, not helping but making everything more complicated.

    So, you might be right ... maybe on purpose.

    PS: if you don't like InPrivate ... Ccleaner force-closes Edge with one click ... every time you use it.

    I blame efficiency mode.

    I'm using windows 11 on a new HP laptop.

    Sick of hearing the fan because of processes that keep starting themselves even when set to manual startup or are disabled. These are all using efficiency mode.

    I removed ms office and disabled office click to run but the process keeps on popping up.

    Widgets is another one with it's webview2 processes, i think they might be connected with edge and keeping it running.
