Hi All,
I know ... this is old and usually easy ... turn off "Startup Boost" and "Continue running background apps ..."
I have those off and it always worked they way it supposed to.
All of a sudden Edge keeps running.
Indication for still running comes from Ccleaner, which removes all trackers. All of a sudden I get the message:
(paraphrased) Ccleaner can't clean because Edge is still running ... needs to be forced shut down"
In Task manager I also still see 11 Edge processes going even though Edge is shut off.
Again ... "Startup Boost" and "Background Apps ..." are unchecked in settings.
Any suggestions?
I repaired Edge already and nothing changed. Its updated.
PS: I checked in another machine (Win10), same Edge version ... no problems here ... all Edge processes in Task Manager disappear
when shutting Edge down.

Hi,
Selecting the "Disable" option will disable Edge from running in the background.
You also have the option to select "Enable" and select "Prevent prelaunch"
Run a test and see if any of the options help resolve the issue.

Did not work. Edge still runs in the background when closed.
Found out something, but not sure if it's a lead.
I discovered Office/Outlook 365 on my machine, even though I have office 2016 installed ... and that's what I'm using.
So, some suggest that Outlook 365 keeps running Edge in the background.
I uninstalled 365 and now Edge closes immediately in Task Manager, at the top and down in background apps.
Good!
However, when opening an actual website, it stays on.
So, only a partial success.
Also - Microsoft Edge Webview2 Runtime disappeared, of which some say it's directly connected to 365.
Anyways, all this is not really the brake through answer but might give others some further ideas.
BTW - the machine with Win10 I have at work (which has no problems regarding edge background continuing)
has also 365 installed and shows Edge Webview ... but has, as mentioned before, no problems regarding Edge
keep running in the background.
Is it something specifically in Win11 that screwed Edge up?

No, I haven't seen a solution yet either.
However, consulting the Ccleaner Forum, it was suggested that it is other Windows and/or outside apps that use edge as a resource and that's what makes it run in the background / ending up Ccleaner to need force-closing it.
So, no answer and it is clearly a Microsoft issue, either a mistake since latest Edge updates or deliberate because of a new feature.
(again-the problem did not exist recently and still does not exist on my Win10 machine at work.)
Please open Edge and go to Help and make a complaint/suggestion directly to the Edge team. (repeatedly!)
The more do it the better.

I haven't seen a resolution yet. I thought this was fixed because Edge started shutting down as it should and not continue to run in the background. That lasted only a few days. Now it's doing it again. Frustrating. I've tried to isolate. Sometimes it shuts down (usually if I don't navigate through the web, but once I begin to navigate, that's when I see it consistently continue to run in the background).
