Edge keeps running in the Background

Hi All,

I know ... this is old and usually easy ... turn off "Startup Boost" and "Continue running background apps ..."

I have those off and it always worked they way it supposed to.

All of a sudden Edge keeps running.

Indication for still running comes from Ccleaner, which removes all trackers. All of a sudden I get the message:

(paraphrased) Ccleaner can't clean because Edge is still running ... needs to be forced shut down"

In Task manager I also still see 11 Edge processes going even though Edge is shut off.

Again ... "Startup Boost" and "Background Apps ..." are unchecked in settings.

Any suggestions?

I repaired Edge already and nothing changed. Its updated.

PS: I checked in another machine (Win10), same Edge version ... no problems here ... all Edge processes in Task Manager disappear

when shutting Edge down.

Thanks

The product should work when it is distributed to the user community. Why on earth mess with workarounds, taking up user time on something that may not work or cause issues elsewhere.

Clean fixes and updates from Microsoft should be the priority for all fixes. It seems Microsoft has yet to find a solution. I use CCleaner software, and I've noticed that, in addition to Edge running after quitting the application, OneDrive is doing the same thing in both Windows 10 and 11.

This happened to me also. A problem i see is there are people who recommend doing all these dumb things to do a workaround. The issue in this case is WE DON'T WANT EDGE RUNNING. We don't need to end the task in task manager or create some .bat file to run, etc. We just need to know the real reason edge is still running. Edge has many options to run. Try turning some of them off. For me, I have turned off many options BUT i need to turn off "USE GRAPHICS ACCELERATION WHEN AVAILABLE". Now my Microsoft Edge does not keep running in the background. If that doesn't work for you, check out all the other options that are in edge. There are so many things that are not needed.

I have had to do this twice so far. First time Edge closed completely. A few days later I went into task manager and there Edge was, running 16 tasks in the background while it was closed. I ran Pedro's suggestion again, and so far Edge closes completely. again. I saved the 2 files that were made in this process to my "Documents" folder. So far so good!

Makes you wonder why it is so difficult to completely close all running processes in a closed browser.... I also use Chrome and Opera, and they never keep running in the background after you close them. They load and run as fast as Edge but without taxing your resources after you close them.

Guess Microsoft Edge is just special......

I don't use streaming services, I've switched off every single option in Edge and it still keeps things running in the background after I exit, often 10+ processes.
