Edge keeps running in the Background

Hi All,

I know ... this is old and usually easy ... turn off "Startup Boost" and "Continue running background apps ..."

I have those off and it always worked they way it supposed to.

All of a sudden Edge keeps running.

Indication for still running comes from Ccleaner, which removes all trackers. All of a sudden I get the message:

(paraphrased) Ccleaner can't clean because Edge is still running ... needs to be forced shut down"

In Task manager I also still see 11 Edge processes going even though Edge is shut off.

Again ... "Startup Boost" and "Background Apps ..." are unchecked in settings.

Any suggestions?

I repaired Edge already and nothing changed. Its updated.

PS: I checked in another machine (Win10), same Edge version ... no problems here ... all Edge processes in Task Manager disappear

when shutting Edge down.

Thanks

    Thanks for your insights, Rodro.

Yes, InPrivate might not be favourable for the ones who want popups and ads, weather, etc.

However, I don't see any background apps after closing Edge when InPrivate.

All in all, except for the ones who experience actual CPU slowdown / fan speed issues, it doesn't really

matter. But it should be fixed, in principle.

Just keep telling them in Edge Feedback.

    Cheers

It's unlikely. None of the Edge 122 release notes mention any fix or changed behavior related to this bug (reported by many Windows 11 and some Windows 10 users since October 2023).

Klaus's workaround using the InPrivate mode may be a temporal workaround for some but also not for everyone, so we (Windows 11 users, at least), on the official build (stable release channel), still need the issue to be investigated, acknowledged, and fixed officially.

I and others reported this issue using the official Edge Feedback feature, but nothing has been done to fix this misbehavior.

Maybe someone knows (I'm out of ideas, to be honest) how to effectively bring the attention of the MS Edge support/development team to this problem that has been reported by many since October 2023.

I know, I don't have it either. I am just saying maybe the bug is fixed on Edge 122.

    Hi Sidney,

again ... I have - never had - any Edge startup items in Task Manager.

However, I still have Edge Version 121.0.2277.83 - so await 122.

    Please see alternative fix above/
