Hi All,
I know ... this is old and usually easy ... turn off "Startup Boost" and "Continue running background apps ..."
I have those off and it always worked they way it supposed to.
All of a sudden Edge keeps running.
Indication for still running comes from Ccleaner, which removes all trackers. All of a sudden I get the message:
(paraphrased) Ccleaner can't clean because Edge is still running ... needs to be forced shut down"
In Task manager I also still see 11 Edge processes going even though Edge is shut off.
Again ... "Startup Boost" and "Background Apps ..." are unchecked in settings.
Any suggestions?
I repaired Edge already and nothing changed. Its updated.
PS: I checked in another machine (Win10), same Edge version ... no problems here ... all Edge processes in Task Manager disappear
when shutting Edge down.
Thanks

Thanks. I really appreciate the help.
Video on my machine skip frames with the Intel GPU and it is very annoying especially when watching football and other fast action video.
Doesn't matter what the video is playing on ...Edge, Chrome, Plex...video is not smooth at all.
When I force whatever app plays video to use the NVIDIA GPU, the video is perfect.
Hard to believe an XPS-15 can't play smooth video with default settings but it has been this way for the 4 years I have owned the laptop (WIN10 and WIN11). It has a high-res OLED screen so maybe that has something to do with it? Don't know.
Since I use Edge to watch (HBO)MAX which currently doesn't have a windows app, I have the computer switch the GPU for Edge. I can't say if this was a WIN10 problem for me because I used Chrome then but since switching to WIN11, I kinda like Edge and would like to keep using it.
Edge is definitely loading things in the background because when I open it, I have a full page of new stuff (not cached) up on the screen in the blink of an eye.
It is not really a big problem that Edge continues to run and my GPU doesn't switch back other than I like things to work the way they are supposed to. If I was running the laptop on the battery more than I typically do, maybe it would be a power draw issue for me.
Again ... thanks for the help. Hopefully it will get resolved at some point.
Yeah, it's a bummer.
But I like Edge for everything else. If it wasn't for Ccleaner, pointing it out every time I run it, I would probably not even know about the problem, and with a powerful machine it would also not really affect performance.
However, I understand DJK_999's concern regarding his GPU switching.
I guess, most people wouldn't even know nor give a hoot about the issue. But some, like myself, just want it perfect or need to know what's going on.
I have tried everything, including Group Editor settings, and tried to stop other apps/processes ... to no avail.
And again - the issue does NOT exist in my other machine with Win10....???!!!???
... some other apps introduced with Win11 keeping it going??
All I can say is bombard the Edge team with complaints in Feedback Hub / or directly from Edge Help.
Cheers
Same problem. Very frustrating. Windows 11 on an XPS-15.
I have the graphics settings use my high-performance NVIDIA GPU when Edge is running, and the desire is to revert back to the power saving Intel GPU when I close Edge, but Edge never really closes. Edge continues to run in the background forever regardless of settings and the NVIDIA GPU remains enabled unless I force close Edge in Task Manager.
May have to switch back to Chrome if this isn't fixed soon which is a shame because I have really started to enjoy Edge.
Why is it that some enter a discussion without reading the previous posts?
It has been several times / throughout the post clearly stated that ALL disable options,
in Edge settings and in Group Editor, have been done....keeps running background apps/processes
DESPITE ALL options explored.
Hi,
Selecting the "Disable" option will disable Edge from running in the background.
You also have the option to select "Enable" and select "Prevent prelaunch"
Run a test and see if any of the options help resolve the issue.
Greetings
Did not work. Edge still runs in the background when closed.
