Edge keeps running in the Background

Hi All,

I know ... this is old and usually easy ... turn off "Startup Boost" and "Continue running background apps ..."

I have those off and it always worked they way it supposed to.

All of a sudden Edge keeps running.

Indication for still running comes from Ccleaner, which removes all trackers. All of a sudden I get the message:

(paraphrased) Ccleaner can't clean because Edge is still running ... needs to be forced shut down"

In Task manager I also still see 11 Edge processes going even though Edge is shut off.

Again ... "Startup Boost" and "Background Apps ..." are unchecked in settings.

Any suggestions?

I repaired Edge already and nothing changed. Its updated.

PS: I checked in another machine (Win10), same Edge version ... no problems here ... all Edge processes in Task Manager disappear

when shutting Edge down.

Thanks

Sadly, the issue is not fixed for me using version 122.0.2365.52 (Official build). So, I need to continue using the Windows End Task feature for developers to close Edge.

By the way, did you check by loading a website at least before closing Edge and checking if it's still running in the background? I mean not only the new tab page (in my case, the Layout is Custom with all the bloat stuff off) when Edge starts and before closing it.

For me, the issue never triggers when opening Edge with the new tab page loaded only and then closing it, but before loading any website and then closing it.

This is what fixed me. The information below was given to me and I'm giving it to you. Download and install the so called "Upgrade" re-installation of Windows 10 22H2. Be patient - it takes time - (you can do small chores between the Downloads and Installation). THEN, do what you normally do to get Windows Updates (Settings> Updates & Security > Resume or "Check for Updates" Here is the information:

Note: before doing this make sure to create a restore point: https://support.microsoft.com/en-hk/help/402753...

    1. go to this link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-downlo...
    2. Select Download Now, and select Run. You need to be an administrator to run this tool.
    3. On the License terms page, if you accept the license terms, select Accept.
    4. On the What do you want to do? page, select Upgrade this PC now, and then select Next.
    5. After downloading and installing, it should fix the issue.

    Hi All,

it is my suspicion that all the new "big Brother" aiding features need Edge to be running in the background.

That's why I got rid of all of these: Copilot, Teams, OneDrive, Outlook in general, Telemetry, etc.

BTW - all can be accessed signed in online / from your browser, e.g., onedrive.com ... none need to be on your computer (except maybe copilot). All of this stuff is useless and does not need to be installed if you want to use it.

That being said ... again ... I switched to Edge "InPrivate" view, as default ... problem gone! And no annoying

gossip, sports, weather **** under the search field anymore!

    Cheers

I tested on my sister's computer and Edge is working normally and closing all process after the browser is closed. However Copilot is not activated in the system.
