Edge keeps running in the Background

Hi All,

I know ... this is old and usually easy ... turn off "Startup Boost" and "Continue running background apps ..."

I have those off and it always worked they way it supposed to.

All of a sudden Edge keeps running.

Indication for still running comes from Ccleaner, which removes all trackers. All of a sudden I get the message:

(paraphrased) Ccleaner can't clean because Edge is still running ... needs to be forced shut down"

In Task manager I also still see 11 Edge processes going even though Edge is shut off.

Again ... "Startup Boost" and "Background Apps ..." are unchecked in settings.

Any suggestions?

I repaired Edge already and nothing changed. Its updated.

PS: I checked in another machine (Win10), same Edge version ... no problems here ... all Edge processes in Task Manager disappear

when shutting Edge down.

Thanks

Hi all (DJK999, Rosco, Chien Sage) and thanks for your ideas just above.

    Quick comments:

    • No - I don't experience any increased CPU usage or fan speed. Actually, the whole thing has no negative effect on my machine. I actually would have not noticed at all if it wasn't for Ccleaner informing that a 'Force Close" of Edge is necessary to do a cleaning. So, it's more a question of principle and curiosity.
    • Chen's statement about Edge being used for all kinds of non-browser internet usage makes a lot of sense. I think that's the reason ... all kinds of new features in windows that need internet access ... and Edge is used for that. In regard to spying on you / collecting data ... I don't see a reason to switch to Google ... as they weren't spying on us, even more so. Edge works very nicely, is super-fast and more secure than anything Google.
    • Again: I eliminated Edge running in the background (at least from what I can see in Task Manager) by using "InPrivate" mode as default. And even if it still would, it has no negative effect on my machine. DJK 999's CPU issue must have another reason or a failing machine. InPrivate also eliminated the annoying gossip / sports-**** popups under the search bar.

For me there is no reason to switch to another browser - Edge is very good and integrated. And there are various tweaks in Edge Settings, Windows Settings, Services, Task Manager and Registry to keep Microsoft's increased "big brother attitude" under control.

I have a whole list available but was also posted further up.

Regardless, please keep bombarding Microsoft via Feedback Hub with your concerns.

    Cheers

You described my symptoms very well. Ditto! That was the greatest selling feature of EDGE - that it deletes what I choose and choose Not when I close the browser. And, I fear, that Edge is STILL saving every Browsing, History, Cache and Cookies in separate 'ghost' files. It's MONEY they care about.

Well the latest Edge update seems to have made things worse.

Not only do the tasks continue after closing...now there is more system CPU usage than before both when Edge is open and after it is closed.

So much usage my fan speed increases significantly after just a few seconds of opening Edge and continues to run fast long after closing edge.

When I kill Edge in task manager, 2 seconds later the fan speed drops.

Well that about does it for me.

I have switched over to Chrome.

Maybe I'll give Edge another try in a few months.

    Hi,

please have a look at my processes... Edge under 0.5% with two major websites open.

I have no idea why you have all these things running.

I also have the same Edge version.

My Windows version is also 22H2 in Win10 ... however in Win11 its 23H2.

I would start a post asking about unusual resource usage...?

    Cheers

    Hi,

no, I don' have any of those symptoms. It must be something else. Actually, I only noticed that Edge runs in the background because ccleaner made me aware of it. Otherwise, I would not even know ... no sucking up of resources. What you described, in my humble opinion, can't be caused by Edge. It must be a huge diversion of resources by something.

Again, it happened only in Win11 machine ... not in Win10 machine, both quite powerful.

Hope you can solve the problem.
