Edge keeps running in the Background

Hi All,

I know ... this is old and usually easy ... turn off "Startup Boost" and "Continue running background apps ..."

I have those off and it always worked they way it supposed to.

All of a sudden Edge keeps running.

Indication for still running comes from Ccleaner, which removes all trackers. All of a sudden I get the message:

(paraphrased) Ccleaner can't clean because Edge is still running ... needs to be forced shut down"

In Task manager I also still see 11 Edge processes going even though Edge is shut off.

Again ... "Startup Boost" and "Background Apps ..." are unchecked in settings.

Any suggestions?

I repaired Edge already and nothing changed. Its updated.

PS: I checked in another machine (Win10), same Edge version ... no problems here ... all Edge processes in Task Manager disappear

when shutting Edge down.

Thanks

    Hello,

I am not a computer expert. I was curious if I was the only one who sees specific applications (when I control, alt., and delete to go to the task manager. Microsoft Teams will show 19 are running in the background, and so many other apps do the same. Why does this occur when only one application is opened by me? Duplicates, triplicates, etc., are always running. This happens with all of my computers. If anyone has an answer for me, I would appreciate it. There has got to be an explanation.

    Thank you,

    Quick response to above 3:

    • The 3 Edge services are only for updating and are all always stopped anyways unless an update comes in or is triggered under

    "About Microsoft Edge" manually.

    • Group Editor setting "Disable" only disables the choices below ("prevent ..." or " allow ..."). If "Disabled" is selected, it is whatever the default by Microsoft for this item is.

So, I'm sorry to say, suggested settings did not work, as DJK_999 mentioned.

At this point, keep bombarding the Edge team with complaints in Feedback Hub or straight from Edge.

I wouldn't be that concerned but I like Edge otherwise in everything.

    Cheers

    Hello DJK_999,

same here... opening Edge and closing shortly without using it / opening a site, etc ... all closes / no background processes.

But as soon as I go on a website, then close ... background apps kepp running until force closed (Ccleaner) or "end process".

as you mentioned above ... no changes after recommendations by do2xg ... I will see later.

AGAIN: right now, here at the Win10 machine .. no issues / problems of any kind!!! even with no changes made in Group Editor.

    Hi do2xg,

I'm not at the machine in question at the moment but will definitely try later.

(note! - here, at Win10 machine .. no problems!!)

Also: the three services for Edge ... all three are set to manual but two of them with (Triggert) ...?

should I set to just manual?

Also: just to clarify ... the problem is not that Edge starts by itself but keeps running in the background after closing.

Only after "end process(es)" or using force close with Ccleaner, Edge is completely closed.

It only happens after actually opening a website ... not when only opening Edge and closing right away.

I'll check settings in Group Editor (as described by you) later and try "disabled"

But here is an important point:

Shouldn't it be "enabled" ... then set below to "prevent pre-launch" ... with "enabled" meaning: having a choice??

while setting to "disable" simply means having no choice at all and default applies.

    Thanks

Thanks, but it does not work. Win 11 Pro.

Same as before. I can open Edge and then close it withing a few seconds and the background tasks stop upon each close.

But when I open Edge and actually use it for a bit and then close it, the background tasks do not stop unless Edge is ended in Task Manager (or via batch file as you suggest).

This happens regardless of Edge settings, policy settings, or service settings.

Also, Edge just auto updated to the latest version and the issue remains.
