What is bzib.nelreports.net and deff.nelreports.net in relation to Microsoft Edge?

I am a Microsoft Edge user and I have recently noticed that my browser is attempting to connect to bzib.nelreports.net and deff.nelreports.net. My security software, Bitdefender, has flagged these connection attempts due to an expired certificate.

I would like to understand why these connections are being made and whether this is expected behavior for Microsoft Edge. If it is, could you please provide some context as to what bzib.nelreports.net and deff.nelreports.net is used for? If it’s not expected behavior, could anyone advise on the steps I should take to address this issue?

Note: This issue was fixed on 15 Nov 2023 by updating the site's certificates.

Explanation:

Several certificates used on subdomains of this domain expired last week. Certificate expiration has no impact on security or the end user. Basically, the browser will not be able to submit network error logging reports until the certificate is fixed. Network error logging is an HTML5 feature that helps site owners discover network connectivity issues.

Your security software simply announces "Hey, this certificate is bad", a fact that the browser already determined for itself and responds to by not connecting to the server in question.

Security software provides a redundant warning; the browser will not use connections with expired or invalid certificates.

Subdomain names are random strings of characters with no particular meaning.

The appropriate team has been informed of the certificate expiration and corrected the issue.

    This is a multi-pronged problem in my opinion.

    1. The certificate has expired and the owner of those sites needs to obtain a new certificate.
    2. Why is traffic being directed to sites without the end users' knowledge?

    I get these messages from Bitdefender before I even open Edge. I don't have the news app installed (as several have alluded to). Which means Microsoft has designed Edge to call home and report data. I want to know what data is being reported and where in the end user agreement from Microsoft does it state that I must allow this traffic in the first place.

    Guys, let me tell you something, specially the people from MS. Those files will collect data from our Computers and pass it on to specific servers at Microsoft so this company can use it to exploit business using our personal information and habits. I am talking about everything you do. From banking through to communicating with your loved ones etc.

    Off Course MS denies this at all costs because, the ordinary folk, cannot prove this so easily, and will most certainly not complaint in Court.

    In my opinion is an infringment agains meine and your moral integrity and an abuse of trust; having Edge being imposed forcefully upon us, and also use it to oberve our behaviour. That is what all those files are about!

    I would like to know if Microsoft allows us to spy on them. Hell they do not! Shame on Microsoft!

    I have allowed Bitdefender to block things like this all the time. That is why it is there.

    I am here now just to alert people of this situation, and I can see a lot of people complainting about it.

    Do as you wish. I block it and have blocked Edge all the time. It will be removed from my computer very soon as it becoming a menace. In fact the more I block it the more problems I have withing my windows and my computer. Microsoft misbehaves very badly. Google does too.

    Kill it.
