Window Display in MS Edge Randomly Blurs

Good day,

Sometimes when I am using MS Edge, the window display blurs seemingly without cause and stays there for a few minutes. When I say "window display" I mean it only applies to the Edge Work window I have open (I don't remember it occurring with other profile windows), and it isn't the whole window, but only the page display which is everything below the URL line.

At first, I suspected this might have something to do with Sleeping Tabs since it sometimes occurs when I step away from my computer. When I return, if I click anywhere on the page display, it returns to normal. However, I tried disabling sleeping tabs when it occurred randomly (while I was using the page) and it still persisted.

Apart from when I have left the computer for a while and clicking, there is nothing that I have found that consistently restores the normal unblurred screen. I have had some level of success with opening new tabs (this sometimes fixes it), but this does not always work and is not predictable.

Below are two screenshots - normal and blurred:

My current version of Edge is 118.0.2060.1 (Official build) dev (64-bit). I have also reported this through Send Feedback.

If anyone knows about this, I would appreciate any assistance.

Thank you.

119.0.2151.42 (Beta) and 120.0.2186.0 (Dev/Canary) should have the fixes.

I'll reply back with the Edge versions that have the change that allows "no policies" to imply "never blur for inactivity". The change that I previously mentioned that is in Edge Canary is going to require a second fix (due to technical reasons). Hopefully that will land in Canary within 1-2 days; and then both fixes will be taken together to Beta/Stable.

Interestingly enough, I experience this on a M365 tenant where MAM is not enabled nor any policies configured.

However, I also have another M365 tenant where MAM IS enabled, and policies are yet to be configured (in progress).

Somehow, Edge uses a "global" setting somewhere to "control the blur for a lack of a better description" of inactive Edge tabs.

That would be bad. Can you confirm that you're not getting any policies for the profile without MAM enabled: visit edge://policy (in that profile) -- it shouldn't show any policies with "Source" = "Cloud". edge://edge-dlp-internals should also not show "Mam Dlp" as available ("Provider State").

Also, on Edge **Canary**, you can visit edge://mam-internals and click "Simulate Idle" and it shouldn't effect non-MAM profiles. On that same page you can (simulate) trigger device health warnings ("Simulate Healthcheck", OS version too high + Warn) and it'll complain ("MAM not enabled for profile") if you try that from a non-MAM profile.

    Hi @SSatMS,

I'm sure you are very busy and, potentially, responding here is not your job (I don't know). However, it has been about a week since I asked if you could respond to @Casper Swanepoel (spook)'s post. Indeed, Casper asked his question weeks ago and it just seems like you are avoiding responding to him (since you have responded to others in the meantime).

Again, I'm sure there are many, many reasons why you haven't responded to the questions about deactivating the blurring. But, if one of the reasons is because you don't have an answer yet, please let us know. That is, please keep us informed.

    Thanks.

A change/fix is in the works so that if you don't have any MAM policies configured (but do have MAM enabled -- a somewhat strange situation from our PoV) then the 30-minute inactivity blur will be disabled. The ETA for that is probably a week for Canary and a week longer for Beta/Stable.

I've also passed along the feedback to have an explicit setting for that as well in the Intune portal.

    Hi @SSatMS

Thank you for the feedback. Glad to hear that Microsoft is actually working on a solution for this issue.

Updated Edge again today but the issue remains (FYI):

Microsoft EdgeVersion 119.0.2151.12 (Official build) stable app, beta channel (64-bit)

Would be great if they could fix this so we can put this annoying issue to a close. I am on the Beta Insider Program from MS, and guess another week or so for a solution will not be too bad.

    Regards

    Casper
