Window Display in MS Edge Randomly Blurs

Good day,

Sometimes when I am using MS Edge, the window display blurs seemingly without cause and stays there for a few minutes. When I say "window display" I mean it only applies to the Edge Work window I have open (I don't remember it occurring with other profile windows), and it isn't the whole window, but only the page display which is everything below the URL line.

At first, I suspected this might have something to do with Sleeping Tabs since it sometimes occurs when I step away from my computer. When I return, if I click anywhere on the page display, it returns to normal. However, I tried disabling sleeping tabs when it occurred randomly (while I was using the page) and it still persisted.

Apart from when I have left the computer for a while and clicking, there is nothing that I have found that consistently restores the normal unblurred screen. I have had some level of success with opening new tabs (this sometimes fixes it), but this does not always work and is not predictable.

Below are two screenshots - normal and blurred:

My current version of Edge is 118.0.2060.1 (Official build) dev (64-bit). I have also reported this through Send Feedback.

If anyone knows about this, I would appreciate any assistance.

Thank you.

119.0.2151.42 (Beta) and 120.0.2186.0 (Dev/Canary) should have the fixes.

I'll reply back with the Edge versions that have the change that allows "no policies" to imply "never blur for inactivity". The change that I previously mentioned that is in Edge Canary is going to require a second fix (due to technical reasons). Hopefully that will land in Canary within 1-2 days; and then both fixes will be taken together to Beta/Stable.

Are you saying this a a feature controlled by my organization and there is no setting to disable it on my end? Also, yesterday afternoon, my Teams (application) started blurring. I can roll my mouse over an area, and it will become visible, otherwise the app window blurs. Is this another feature controlled by my organization?

I don't believe Teams (separate app) should be affected by this. Teams in the browser would be.

    Hi @SSatMS,

~~I have a situation that hasn't deactivated the blur when clicking. I am not sure about how to repeat it. I don't have multiple windows open (just one with many tabs). The 'fix' is that I have found moving a tab out of the window to create a new Edge window (with the one tab) turns off the blur. @~~0x80070652 mentioned about having to click through multiple windows until he finds the one - it isn't like that - it is very similar to the click-'fixable' situation.

While I was writing this, the blur happened and did not go away with a click. I have three tab groups (that are closed) and several ungrouped tabs. I clicked through the tabs like @0x80070652 suggested (although, his situation was with many windows open and I only had one window), but they didn't unblur. When I opened one of the closed tab groups, it unblurred. EDIT: I tried this again (open a closed tab group) and it didn't work. The only way I found to unblur the screen is to move a tab out of the window to create a second Edge window (with one tab).

I updated my version today, but it is still hasn't reached the required version number - so I was continuing to wait until a permanent fix was rolled out. However, I concur with @JeffP_aus - this blur is a feature, not a bug? That is a terrible idea. There are so many situations when a user would want a browser open to refer to (even though not actively using it). I have three windows and I might be coding in VS Code while referring to a page with documentation (or anything else) - but I have to keep clicking the blur off because apparently (according to the browser) it isn't being used? Even if it isn't supposed to blur while in use (I suppose this is the fix that is being rolled out), it is still very annoying to have an active browser tab blurred (I completely agree with the sleeping tabs feature for unused tabs).

Further regarding @JeffP_aus' message, has this always been present and only recently turned on by our respective IT teams? That is, is this required to be actively switched on, or was it automatically switched on recently (without admin decision)?
