Ok - This morning I opened Edge (w10) and when I clicked the X to close, it would not close. I tried to minimise and click close, still would not work. I can only close it via task manager or rebooting. Nothing has chnaged since last night, so no idea why it has happened. Is there a simple answer as in apps both uninstall and modify are grayed out.
The PC is mine, not a work one and is W10.

PS - Just tried with my w10 laptop, am able to close edge as normal. So have no idea why the desktop is playing up. Is there a solution?

My thread is getting a bit long - is there a way to close it now? Its obvious there is an issue and there is enough info on here now. As the original poster do I do something to close it?

I was experiencing the same. In trying Larry's solution, I found that the only setting I had enabled was "Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed" and sure enough after disabling it I was able to close Edge.

I gave Edge a few days off and now it works fine. Don't know what fixed it. I have turned hardware acceleration, startup boost and various other quality of life settings back on, and things remain fine for now.
