How can I stop Edge from opening new tabs in a new window?

I just upgraded to Windows 11. I guess that also gave me a new version of Edge. And like most new releases in M$FT, it doesn't work like it used to in even the simplest ways. On my Windows 10 laptop, if I Ctrl-Click on a link in Edge, it opens up a new tab in the same Window. On my Windows 11 laptop, that same action opens up what appears to be a new page, but is really a new tab on a separate page, or something like that. If I close that page, the first page is also closed.

Anyway, what do I need to do to make it work like it used to? Or should I just give up completely and just use Firefox and Chrome?

I checked several websites that suggested solutions, but I could not find the controls they said to use.

    It might be here under the actual ". . . " next to Copilot on the right corner. If you add web sites under that section it will open tabs for those assigned websites when you launch the Edge browser.

    I found the answer everyone!

    When you open a new tab and search for something. On the Right, there will be the three horizontal bars icon, click that, then click settings, click more. Scroll down. There will be two checkboxes, you can deselect them. They mention opening a search link in a new tab, or a newsfeed item in a new tab. Deselect both/either, make sure to hit save and it resolves the issue!

    Sorry, 3 bars will be in your Microsoft Bing search page or even google I think will work too. So not on the actual Microsoft edge settings for some reason. It helped my whole settings.

    I'm using version 131.0.2903.70 (so it tells me) that is the latest version my laptop has updated to.

    Three bars menu > settings (drop down menu) > more (will open a settings page to safe search at heading, see under 'results') > two boxes to uncheck 'open links from search results in a new tab or window's and 'open links from news results in a new tab or window' and deselect them both.

    This should fix the problem. With all pages. Not just in Bing. Not sure how or why it works but did for me.
