How can I stop Edge from opening new tabs in a new window?

I just upgraded to Windows 11. I guess that also gave me a new version of Edge. And like most new releases in M$FT, it doesn't work like it used to in even the simplest ways. On my Windows 10 laptop, if I Ctrl-Click on a link in Edge, it opens up a new tab in the same Window. On my Windows 11 laptop, that same action opens up what appears to be a new page, but is really a new tab on a separate page, or something like that. If I close that page, the first page is also closed.

Anyway, what do I need to do to make it work like it used to? Or should I just give up completely and just use Firefox and Chrome?

I checked several websites that suggested solutions, but I could not find the controls they said to use.

    I have tried to follow the instructions, but can't find the placd to go according to the instructions.

    This is really a PITA.

    This worked for me, thanks!! I only added Windows 11 this week and boy was that a pain always opening a new tab whenever I looked up something else, the top of my screen was covered with tabs when I'd visit ebay or some place like that.

    This is how I reached it:

    1, In your screen SEARCH engine (usually at the bottom of the screen and this is the search engine attached to your computer in the black bar) type in and go to Microsoft Edge.
    2. You are now on the MICROSOFT START page. On the far right top you will see Sign On, the notification bell symbol, and the last one PAGE SETTINGS which looks like a bolt or like a flower. Click that one and you will QUICK LINKS with boxed part pointing down; it may say Off, 1 row, or 2 rows. I put it on 1 ROW. You will also see in Quick links OPEN A NEW TAB and the option to turn on or off. TURN OFF. And then that should end the endless opening tabs. Hope I explained this ok; I'm not the most tech literate person!

    When I get to Microsoft Edge, there are no three dots, no "modify", and no "repair" button. It also says I am using the recommended Edge settings.
