How can I stop Edge from opening new tabs in a new window?

I just upgraded to Windows 11. I guess that also gave me a new version of Edge. And like most new releases in M$FT, it doesn't work like it used to in even the simplest ways. On my Windows 10 laptop, if I Ctrl-Click on a link in Edge, it opens up a new tab in the same Window. On my Windows 11 laptop, that same action opens up what appears to be a new page, but is really a new tab on a separate page, or something like that. If I close that page, the first page is also closed.

Anyway, what do I need to do to make it work like it used to? Or should I just give up completely and just use Firefox and Chrome?

I checked several websites that suggested solutions, but I could not find the controls they said to use.

    The better way to do this without resorting to having multiple browser applications is to use profiles. For example, I have a work profile and a personal profile. A browser profile gives you a separate set of cookies, accounts/passwords, and even many browser settings (for example, I give my personal profile a different browser window color to make it easier to know which profile I'm in). Each Edge profile is tied to a Microsoft account, so you will need a personal account to make a personal profile, or you can choose the option to Browse as guest (I assume it's a temporary profile, so you might be at risk of losing customizations).

    Chrome also has profiles that act similarly. Each Chrome profile is tied to a Google Account, or you can use a Guest profile.

    Hi Cynthia,

    I was having this problem happen to me many times, and it was very frustrating. I have 2 accounts that I use, one for personal use, and one for my work. Every time I opened a tab in the personal browser, it would open a new window/tab in the Work account instead. This made it so I had to login 3 times to get where I wanted.

    The solution I found: Removed my work account from Edge and use it in Google Chrome.

    So now all my personal browsing is done in Edge, and my work browsing is done in Chrome.

    Maybe this will help you, or you already found a solution.

    If you don't want to restore all Edge settings, you can try to repair the Edge installation first.

    1-Click on Start then click on Settings

    2-Click on Apps, then click on Installed apps

    3-Search for "Microsoft Edge", click on the three dots (...) and click on "Modify"

    4-Then click on the "Repair" button and follow the instructions

    5-When finished, relaunch the Edge and check if the problem is fixed

    This procedure will not affect any of your personalization on Edge, it will only repair the installation files.

    Sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue.

    It's probably a problem with the Microsoft Edge settings. Resetting the Edge settings to their default values should fix this problem.

    Yes, I am confident that it is a setting. I would rather not reset all settings. I probably have other settings that I like that may not be the default. Can I change just this one setting?
