How can I stop Edge from opening new tabs in a new window?

I just upgraded to Windows 11. I guess that also gave me a new version of Edge. And like most new releases in M$FT, it doesn't work like it used to in even the simplest ways. On my Windows 10 laptop, if I Ctrl-Click on a link in Edge, it opens up a new tab in the same Window. On my Windows 11 laptop, that same action opens up what appears to be a new page, but is really a new tab on a separate page, or something like that. If I close that page, the first page is also closed.

Anyway, what do I need to do to make it work like it used to? Or should I just give up completely and just use Firefox and Chrome?

I checked several websites that suggested solutions, but I could not find the controls they said to use.

    I've been experiencing for over a year NOTHING fixes it. I'm thinking of deleting Microsoft Edge and just using Fire Fow or regular Google Chrome. I've read the same reply on how to fix it and it doesn't work.

    Neither of these works. For the first option, when I click on "Reset settings", it won't go any further so I can't get to the "Restore settings to their default values" step. I went through the process for the second option and it didn't work. Every time I click on a link, it still opens a new tab/window. I'm tired of opening tab after tab after tab.

    Those instructions worked for a day, then went right back to opening previous session tabs again. So annoying! It slows down the PC!

    Ya easy way is to open up edge browser and do a search for something. At the Top left it will say do not allow edge to open a new tab ( when you first open the browser and haven't done a search the option to shut down new tab isn't made available. You have to do a search and hit enter ... another great feature of windows (((((NOT))))). instead of just putting the option in setting SMH
