How can I stop Edge from opening new tabs in a new window?

I just upgraded to Windows 11. I guess that also gave me a new version of Edge. And like most new releases in M$FT, it doesn't work like it used to in even the simplest ways. On my Windows 10 laptop, if I Ctrl-Click on a link in Edge, it opens up a new tab in the same Window. On my Windows 11 laptop, that same action opens up what appears to be a new page, but is really a new tab on a separate page, or something like that. If I close that page, the first page is also closed.

Anyway, what do I need to do to make it work like it used to? Or should I just give up completely and just use Firefox and Chrome?

I checked several websites that suggested solutions, but I could not find the controls they said to use.

    You have to go to Bing to do it.
    When you go to Bing, press the three lines at the top right,
    go to settings,
    go to the results section there and uncheck both.

    I just discovered the actual answer on my own.

    On the home page of the edge profile, select the settings button at the far right.

    Turn off open in a new tab under quick links. (4th line down) Problem solved.

    I tried posting screenshots, but it would not let me. Sorry.

    Ya easy way is to open up edge browser and do a search for something. At the Top left it will say do not allow edge to open a new tab ( when you first open the browser and haven't done a search the option to shut down new tab isn't made available. You have to do a search and hit enter ... another great feature of windows (((((NOT))))). instead of just putting the option in setting SMH

    Those instructions worked for a day, then went right back to opening previous session tabs again. So annoying! It slows down the PC!
