iCloud.com encountered an error while trying to connect to the server

I get the pop-up that says "iCloud encountered an error connecting to the server". However, if I connect to a mobile hotspot, iCloud works without any issue on Edge!

Observations

  • I am able to access iCloud through my iOS device (iPhone) connected to the same high-speed broadband Wifi connection.
  • iCloud.com is accessible on Edge browser only if my PC is connected to the internet via a mobile (4G/5G) hotspot connection.
  • The issue does not occur at all on Firefox (irrespective of the connection mode)!

Any clues on how to solve this issue? Looks like it's an Edge issue on Windows 11 when connected to a broadband Wifi connection.

Thanks in advance

Roy

Hey,

I'm just here to confirm that disabling IPv6 helped me resolve this issue.

Alternatively, switching to Google Public DNS also resolved the issue as per users on Reddit. To know step-by-step instruction to switch to Google Public DNS check out this guide -- <link removed>

    Hi Roy,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.

It seems like you've done a good job troubleshooting the issue so far. Since iCloud.com works fine on your Edge browser when connected to a mobile hotspot and also works on other browsers like Firefox, the problem might indeed be specific to the interaction between Edge on Windows 11 and your broadband connection. Here are a few additional steps you can try to resolve the issue:

    • Check for any Windows updates or Edge updates that could address networking bugs. Make sure you are on the latest versions.
    • Try disabling any extensions or add-ons that you have installed on Edge browser. Some of them might interfere with iCloud.com or cause compatibility issues. You can disable them by going to Settings > Extensions or by typing edge://extensions in the address bar.

    - Try creating a new Windows user profile and testing iCloud access in Edge there. This will eliminate any corrupted profile issues. Create a local user or administrator account in Windows - Microsoft Support

    • Try resetting the TCP/IP stack in Windows. Open an admin command prompt and run "netsh int ip reset" and restart your computer.

    - Check for any firewall or network security software that could be blocking connections to iCloud. Temporarily disable them to test.

Disclaimer: Temporarily turn off real-time Microsoft Defender antivirus protection in Windows Security. However, keep in mind that if you do so, your device may be vulnerable to threats. So please turn it on immediately once issue fixed.

    • Boot into safe mode with networking and see if iCloud loads there. This will rule out any third-party software conflict. Start your PC in safe mode in Windows - Microsoft Support
    • Try Private Browsing Mode (InPrivate Mode): Use Private Browsing Mode in Edge Browser, which will disable browser extensions and some other settings, and may sometimes solve problems connecting to specific websites.

Since it works in Firefox and on your mobile device, it does seem to be something related specifically to Edge and that broadband WiFi connection that is causing the iCloud connectivity problem. Hopefully one of those troubleshooting steps can help resolve it.

    Your Sincerely
