Why is edge running in the background after copilot installation?

As the title says, I was wondering why Edge is running in the background after Windows Update installed and I disabled Copilot from the taskbar. Edge's settings right now are like this:

Sidebar: disabled

Show Bing chat on sidebar: disabled

Startup Boos: disabled

Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed: disabled

And now I found this running in the background with the browser closed:

That's not even the browser's updater service. I stopped the task and it opened itself again a few minutes later.

As if the fake widgets I don't like or use are always running in the background despite many things I've tried, now I have Edge using system resources for no apparent reason.

Please help me find a solution to this problem.

    I agree that it's a bug. It's a ridiculous and shameful bug. However, Edge continues running in the background once it is closed, even when Copilot and Widgets are completely disabled in the OS (of course, Startup tasks included) and the Edge sidebar, regardless of the related Edge system and performance settings you select. There isn't a "workaround" that can fix the current situation. Only a hotfix/update from MS Edge or MS Windows devs can fix this mess.

    Not running in the background on my machines. 🤷‍♂️

    Only happens if I use the silly Copilot.

    Congratulations to you. However, there are still affected users with Copilot disabled. So, no. It still occurs without the silly Copilot on Win 11 (latest ver/build).

    Found this on Reddit and it works for me. Disabling "Use hardware acceleration when available"

    Upon edit, 10 min later... Disregard. DON'T DO THIS. Your CPU will take a massive hit.

    As of today 19 Jan 2024, 23H2 build 22631.3007 has the same issue.

    This means it's not a bug to fix.

    It is intended to work in the background, no matter what..

    I've been trying to stop it all day long, by using many registry tweaks.

    Disabling it from starting is not a problem, but Once it starts, it never shuts down.

    You have to End Task from the Task Manager.

    But don't worry, I'm sure they will make it Unstoppable, soon..
