As the title says, I was wondering why Edge is running in the background after Windows Update installed and I disabled Copilot from the taskbar. Edge's settings right now are like this:
Sidebar: disabled
Show Bing chat on sidebar: disabled
Startup Boos: disabled
Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed: disabled
And now I found this running in the background with the browser closed:
That's not even the browser's updater service. I stopped the task and it opened itself again a few minutes later.
As if the fake widgets I don't like or use are always running in the background despite many things I've tried, now I have Edge using system resources for no apparent reason.
Please help me find a solution to this problem.

Easy way: Create a new shortcut on the desktop, paste taskkill.exe /F /IM msedge.exe /T , name it. That's it. You can pin it to taskbar if you wish. Now simply click on it to kill all Edge processes running in the background. Shame Microsoft is making us finding workarounds for their bugs.
No. KB5031455 makes no difference. Checked on two laptops. And I don't even have Copilot avail (EU). Edge keeps running in the background and draining the battery.
Any update on that? It's very annoying. Edge is running in background using CPU, SSD, network, ruining S0 sleep mode (as if it wasn't broken already...). Latest stable here. Should I look for another browser? And delete Edge by force to be sure? (Yes it's possible). Fix it, please.
was there ever a fix found for this?? I'm having the same issue... This is actually ridiculous.
UPDATED (2/8/2024): Using MS Edge Version 121.0.2277.110 (Official build) on Windows 11, at least (some Win 10 users reported the same problem on their systems), the issue still occurs and has not been fixed.
The "Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed" setting (in Settings > System and Performance > System settings) doesn't work, and Edge continues running in the background despite using any Edge or related OS settings intended to prevent or get rid of this MS Edge (mis)behavior.
Please, an official application fix is still required.
