Edge is sharing Chrome site logins. How do I prevent this?

I was seeing exactly this. the two browsers were effectively behaving as one. I’d log in on Chrome, run Edge and I’d be logged in there. I’d log in with a different account on Edge, and Chrome would mirror that change. Something was being shared, not just as a one-time transfer, but continually. I might as well have had only one browser.

I reinstalled Chrome, and that fixed it for a while, but then it started to happen again and I couldn’t pinpoint what I did, so I decided that the easiest solution was not to use Chrome and Edge, but instead to try a browser that wasn’t based on the Chromium engine. I now use Chrome and Firefox, and I’ve had no issues.

I’m sorry to Microsoft that was the solution I used, but it worked.

(I switched from Edge rather than Chrome because I didn’t like the sleazy BNPL integration.)

I have the same issue and also was forced to move away from edge. There are many websites that I have a business account and a personal account. (this is a core not an edge case)

Previously I could be logged into both using different browsers. Now edge forces me to share the login context I am now unable to use it any more and had to move to a different browser and away from using edge as my second browser. Sorry Microsoft but this is a huge mistake by the PM responsible.

Throughout Tech history these approaches to force adoption always backfire and cause resentment. There are always alternatives.

Same here. I like Edge a lot, but it’s useless to me if it shares the same session. I’ve switched over to Firefox.

I can't offer any solution, I'm afraid. What you're describing is quite bizarre, and it sounds impossible. There is no way that the two browsers are sharing information; while they have a lot of common functionality through their Chromium connection, both the program files and the user data are kept quite separate.

Each Edge profile has its own settings, making it easy to use more than one profile to access the same website with different user accounts and credentials with no cross-pollination of data.

What is possible is that Windows is trying to be helpful by signing you in automatically where possible. You can control this behaviour at Windows settings ⚙ > Accounts > Email and accounts > Accounts used by other apps.

It might be possible to troubleshoot your situation if you gave the following information about Edge:

• Is the computer joined to a domain, e.g. at work or school?
• Do you have more than one account listed under Accounts used by other apps?
• Do you have more than one profile configured? (Click on the profile picture to see.)
• Do you sign in to the profile(s)?
  • If so, do you use a Microsoft Account or a 'Work or school account'?
• On which site are you seeing this behaviour?
  • Does this site allow for different types of sign-in, e.g. Sign in with Microsoft | Google | Facebook | Email?
  • Do you sign in at this site with a Microsoft Account or a 'Work or school account'?
