How to revert back to the old version of EDGE

Hi Cleo, here's a quick example of how to remove Edge using PowerShell

Open an Elevated Windows PowerShell session by searching, [ Win + s ], for PowerShell and select "Run as Administrator".

The PowerShell Prompt will be displayed similar to;

PS C:\WINDOWS\system32>

To see a list of all installed Windows apps for the current user account, enter the following and press Enter/Return key ...

Get-AppxPackage | Select Name, PackageFullName >"$env:userprofile\Desktop\Apps_List.txt"

Above text is all on the one line and there's a space between PackageFullName and the right chevron >

Currently, I'm using the Legacy version of Edge and the info provided from Apps_List.txt (on the Desktop), is ...

So, if I wanted to remove Edge I'd enter the following and press Enter/Return key ...

remove-appxpackage Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_44.19041.1.0_neutral__8wekyb3d8bbwe

Again, above is all on one line, with a space between 'package' and 'Microsoft.'.

As far as I'm aware, Edge Legacy is restored after you remove Edge Chromium and it's ability to AutoUpdate.

To prevent the Chromium AutoUpdate, open Notepad and copy&paste the following emboldened text ...

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\EdgeUpdate]

"DoNotUpdateToEdgeWithChromium"=dword:00000001

The blank line after "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00", is intentional. Save this text file with any name you wish. Change the file extension, for example, rename chromium.txt to chromium.reg

Merge this .reg file into the Registry by double-clicking it, or right-click it and select 'Open with' then 'Registry Editor'.

Click Yes, when prompted "Are you sure you want to continue?".

Note that making this Registry change will never prevent you from explicitly installing Edge Chromium at a later time.

Intro

You have installed the new version of Edge, aka Edge Chromium.

The version of Edge that you were using before is known as Edge Legacy.

The Legacy version has been replaced by the Chromium version.

There are two things you need to do, remove the Chromium version and

prevent it from automatically installing itself after you've removed it.

Take your time and do it in stages and please refer to my original post as you read this.

About PowerShell

To help to remove Chromium we're using a program called PowerShell.

Do a search for PowerShell and you'll see an option to "Run as Administrator".

PowerShell typically opens in a window with a blue background.

After you type commands into this window and press Enter, PowerShell executes them for you. PowerShell displays a prompt to you, that is, it's sitting waiting for you to tell it what to do. You type commands at the prompt, press Enter and PowerShell will carry out your commands. The line below shows you what the PowerShell prompt looks like.

PS C:\WINDOWS\system32>

You type commands at the end of this line, press Enter and PowerShell will carry them out.

Here's an example.

PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> cls

Pressing Enter after you've typed cls will clear what's currently displayed on the screen.

PowerShell will display the prompt again and is now waiting for you to type another command.

Part 1 : Remove Edge Chromium

The first command you need to type begins with "Get-AppxPackage" as in pic below and previous post.

This command will create a text file on your Desktop called Apps_List.txt

Open this file and look on the left hand side for "Microsoft.Microsoft Edge".

On the same line and to the right of this, will be the PackageFullName for Chromium. (Compare with previous post).

This PackageFullName is essentially the version of Edge Chromium that's installed on your Laptop.

Copying the PackageFullName to the end of the following line and pressing Enter, will remove Chromium.

PS C:\WINDOWS\system32>  remove-appxpackage

(Compare with my example in previous post. Your PackageFullName will obviously be different from mine as I don't have Edge Chromium installed).

Part 2 :  Prevent Chromium from automatically installing itself

Create a new document.

Right-click on an empty space, either In your Documents folder or on the Desktop and

choose "New" then "Text Document".

Copy all the text in bold beginning with "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00".

(Check previous post).

Save this text file and give it any name you like. (Check previous post).

Change the file extension. (Check previous post).

Right-click the .reg file and select 'Open with' then 'Registry Editor'. Click Yes, when prompted to continue.

I find that I have to read a new document at least three times before I fully understand it.

Do not give in, take a break, come back again. You get the drift.

Each time you read this you'll understand a little bit more and become familiar with the lingo.

Eventually, it'll make sense. Just take your time.
