Chromium & Chrome Will Not Save Passwords After 2004 Update

Edge Chromium will not save passwords I have imported from Firefox after the 2004 update and that goes for Chrome as well. They are removed after a restart, or wake from sleep and now I have discovered that after I import passwords from Firefox and I verify they are there then close Edge wait several minutes then open it they are removed again.  This is ridiculous to have to deal with and it did not happen until I installed the disastrous 2004 update. Thank god my Firefox was not screwed up with this update.

 This may be good news. I was reading over in MS forums and found this in a discussion thread there  https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftedge/forum/all/i-cant-find-my-favorites-after-i-installed-the-new/1d8bd70d-2a2a-4523-837c-866533e2694f?tm=1592574379662 . I figured if this could be used for for imports from Edge Legacy I could use this for imports from Firefox. I used Number 4 which says:

Method 4: Delete the Edge User Data folder

(Warning: This method will not work if you installed the new Microsoft Edge from Windows Update.)  If you installed the new Microsoft Edge manually from the download site, then you can force a re-import of all of the browser data from Microsoft Edge Legacy by deleting your User Data folder.

1.       Close all instances of Microsoft Edge.

2.       In File Explorer, navigate to C:\ > Users > [username] > AppData > Local > Microsoft > Edge.

3.       Delete the User Data folder.

4.       Open Microsoft Edge.

5.       Proceed through the onboarding experience.

6.       Check your favorites by selecting Settings and More (...) > Favorites > Manage favorites > Other favorites.

I did just what it said. When I clicked on Edge like it said do the onboarding experience I made sure I was signed in to Edge with my MS account and also that Syncing was turned on before I went through the set up and imported my passwords from Firefox. So far the passwords lasted through several sleep wake ups and a restart. I have seen the if you sign out of your Edge account your passwords will go away but if your sign in and turn on sync they will appear. If you do not see your password after you sign in to your edge account then go to your edge profile and verify it as this seems to be a security thing now. Good luck.

Well Tom it looks as if the only way you will be able to see or use your saved passwords in either Chrome or Edge Chromium is to sign in to your Google account for Chrome or your MS account  for Edge and make sure you have sync turned on in order to see and use them. I have not heard of anything that this will change or being worked on where you do not need to sign in to use saved passwords. I feel this is a way for MS and Google to track what you are doing on those browsers and gather data on the user. I also feel that it is a security problem since the privacy of saved passwords for sites is suppose to be secure. I have filed a bug with MS Feed Back Hub and of course I have heard nothing. If the situation we are using now changes then I will be very surprised. This is why I will always keep Firefox as my default browser as I do not have to sign in to my Firefox account to use my saved passwords and Firefox is very security minded. My backup browser is Ice Dragon 64 bit which is based on Firefox platform including security and TOR browser. If I hear anything I will let you know.

I believe I have the same issue. I can sign in again to sync on Chrome and Edge and they will work. But when I reboot Sync is paused/stopped on both. So I have to sign in to sync each time I reboot.

Opera, Opera Beta and Goggle Chrome Canary are the same.

I also have to sign in to OneDrive and Microsoft Teams after a reboot.

They all work fine on 1909 and retain their sign ins after reboot. But on 2004 they have to be signed in again after each reboot.

This was the case with me as well with browsers especially chromium based browsers. Firefox which is my default browser and always has been was not effected by the 2004 update but I do sign in to my Firefox account at least once a day to sync my settings in case I lose it for whatever reason. I also use IceDragon 64 bit as my backup browser and I still have Edge which I sometimes use. I got rid of Chrome as it is a resource hog and I particularly do not like Google spying on what I do on the web. OneDrive I have no use for at all and I removed it from my computer. I have heard of to many users getting screwed over with OneDrive like losing files, deleting files and the little bit of free storage they offer is not worth the problems and besides I get 50 GB of cloud storage in Norton 360 if I want it. If I need to share a file I will use Dropbox.  I backup all my personal files like doc, pics, videos on a weekly basis on two thumb drives in case one fails I have a duplicate. I do a complete system back up to an external hard drive monthly. I also have sync turned on in Settings and I create system a restore point every three days and I have 20 GB allocated on my SSD for that. It is first in first out and system restore points are your friend.

Now for some odd reason my saved passwords in Edge are staying visible even after a restart and I do not need to sign in to my MS account anymore to see them. I do not know if it is because of an update from MS which I keep up with all updates or it could have been from the fact that back in early August I had had to create a new user account on my computer as my other one got corrupted somehow. I frankly believe that either the 2004 update or some update post 2004 installation did something to existing user accounts. Who knows what MS does anymore.
