Chromium & Chrome Will Not Save Passwords After 2004 Update

Edge Chromium will not save passwords I have imported from Firefox after the 2004 update and that goes for Chrome as well. They are removed after a restart, or wake from sleep and now I have discovered that after I import passwords from Firefox and I verify they are there then close Edge wait several minutes then open it they are removed again.  This is ridiculous to have to deal with and it did not happen until I installed the buggy 2004 update. Thank god my Firefox was not screwed up with this update.

Update: The only resolution I have found to solve this problem was to make a new admin user profile for myself on my desktop computer and I made a new admin user profile for my wife on her laptop. Once I did this the problem with Edge not showing passwords that I had imported from my Firefox browser was solved. I now do not need to sign in to my MS account in Edge to see or use my saved passwords. I have since uninstalled Google Chrome from my browser as I see no need to clutter my computer with two chromium browsers. I use Firefox as my default browser and Edge as my backup browser.

    1. Yes I am running Malwarebytes Premium v4.2.3.  I have previously disabled it to  see if that made a difference and it didn't.

I don't think Malwarebytes is the culprit, although it has been known to cause other problems. These have been quickly solved by MB. However, if third-party security software is responsible for an otherwise unexplained fault, disabling it won't establish guilt. The software would have to be completely uninstalled to remove all its tentacles into the deepest reaches of the operating system without which it couldn't do its job.

    1. I have run this several times and the message is the folder/item cannot  be found.

You're seeing this error when trying to run the PowerShell command? If so, you've most probably got a typo in the command. Let's try again:

    1. Copy the text in the box:
    Get-ScheduledTask foreach { If ((xml).GetElementsByTagName("LogonType").'#text' -eq "S4U") { $_.TaskName } }
    1. Type powershell into the Windows search box. When the result Windows PowerShell | app appears, click on its Run as administrator option. Give UAC consent when asked.

    3.  When the prompt appears, press Ctrl-V to paste the command you copied and press Enter.

Wait for the command to complete. If you have any tasks using S4U, they will be listed; otherwise, the prompt will reappear without anything being listed. If any task matching the pattern is located, open Task Scheduler (search for it) and edit the task ("Do not store password") or disable it as appropriate.

If you see an error message at any stage, please quote it in full or post a screenshot of it.

When I last  spoke to MS some weeks ago I was told they are aware of the problem and were working on the solution.

This isn't one problem, although the end-result is the same for affected users. The one we're checking here is a Windows problem, so Windows engineers are working on a fix that will be rolled out by Windows Update in due course. The problem with losing cookies arises within Edge, so it's Edge engineers who have to solve it. The fix was found and deployed, but a subsequent update apparently broke it again. I'm not sure what the current status is.

    Thoughts?

It would help if you could confirm that:

    1. You are not running any third-party security software (Norton, McAfee, Avast etc.).

If you can't confirm this, please say what software (version name and number). 2. You don't have any tasks scheduled that use S4U authentication. The instructions for how to find out were given in my earlier response in this thread. 3. You have none of the options enabled on this page: edge://settings/clearBrowsingDataOnClose(copy that and paste it into the address bar in a new tab).

If you have enabled any of them, please say which ones.

These three cover the known reasons for faults similar to the one you're seeing. The symptoms vary from case to case; I wouldn't expect clearing browsing data to cause the fault you're seeing, but nos. 1 and 2 are possible culprits.

As always, the best way to get the Edge team working on a problem is to submit feedback using the applet within the browser: press Alt-Shift-i or click ⋯ (Settings and more) > Help and feedback > Send feedback. Be sure to submit diagnostic data so they can see what's going on.

    Good morning

    1. Yes I am running Malwarebytes Premium v4.2.3.  I have previously disabled it to  see if that made a difference and it didn't.
    2. I have run this several times and the message is the folder/item cannot  be found.
    3. Confirmed. All tabs are inactive.
    4. I use Outlook 2010 Win 10 and have checked that my email setup was set to 'save password' which it was, because since update 2004 everytime I log in I have to re-enter my password.

When I last  spoke to MS some weeks ago I was told they are aware of the problem and were working on the solution. I assumed that update 20H2 would resolve the issue. Obviously not.

I do wish MS would try harder to get the basics right, particularly for those of us who work on their own account. As I have said previously, all these problems stem on update 2004.

Hello all.  I had hoped that the 20H2 release would take care of this issue.  However, after installing it (this time in a user profile and not as admin), it started to erase them after 30 minutes and forced me to restore.  This made the fourth and final time I will attempt.  I contacted Microsoft via chat and the help there is completely clueless and can barely address the most basic of questions. Even AI would have done a better job and that isn't saying much.  They first stated that losing the Chrome passwords is a problem for Google to handle until I told them that this is also happening with my Outlook which is an installed version from my very expensive Office Pro purchase, not Office 365.  Also, what I think may be important to acknowledge here is that I have a laptop that I downloaded the 2004 (and the 20H2) update and it works fine.  However, it should also be noted that I updated to Windows 10 from Win 8 in January.  That same week I updated my desktop to 10 from Windows 7 Pro and I am wondering if that isn't the issue.  I was very happy with Win 7 Pro and was very upset to lose it. I do not like Win 10.  I'm wondering if MS failed to adequately design Win 10 Pro so that it adequately overwrites Win 7 Pro or if there is a corrupt file somewhere.  Thoughts?

I found before I made myself a new local admin user account that if you sign into your MS account in Edge your saved passwords will come back. Like ¡Firedog said the fact that you upgraded from 8 and 7 to Win 10 could be a factor. I would check your settings and see what Edge automatically erases when you close it. Saved passwords could very well be checked to be erased along with cache, cookie etc. etc.  The way I fixed mine after the 2004 update was to create a new user local admin account for myself on my OMEN Obelisk desktop and I created one for my wife on her HP Envy laptop and the password problem was solved as well as problems 2004 created like the aggravation multiple push notifications that so many users were getting about a problem with our MS accounts and needed to be verified. The 2004 upgrade was considered a disaster by many Windows websites and rightly so and hopefully MS has learned a lesson about putting out an update like this with so many known bugs in it just to meet their timeline. My default browser is Firefox and I never had any saved password problems while this was going on and my backup browser is Edge that I use for certain things while I am using Firefox. I also have TOR. I removed Chrome from my computer as I found Edge to be more efficient and faster. I use Norton 360 as my antivirus and I have used Norton for years with no problems. I feel any antivirus program that is free like Windows Defender is just not enough to protect our computers and there have been problems with that. You get whet you pay for. If I were you I would start thinking about investing in and replacing your computers especially the one with Win 7. Win 10 is not going away but it is only going to be added to with each update and we who use Windows will have to live with it.
