Chromium & Chrome Will Not Save Passwords After 2004 Update

Edge Chromium will not save passwords I have imported from Firefox after the 2004 update and that goes for Chrome as well. They are removed after a restart, or wake from sleep and now I have discovered that after I import passwords from Firefox and I verify they are there then close Edge wait several minutes then open it they are removed again.  This is ridiculous to have to deal with and it did not happen until I installed the buggy 2004 update. Thank god my Firefox was not screwed up with this update.

Update: The only resolution I have found to solve this problem was to make a new admin user profile for myself on my desktop computer and I made a new admin user profile for my wife on her laptop. Once I did this the problem with Edge not showing passwords that I had imported from my Firefox browser was solved. I now do not need to sign in to my MS account in Edge to see or use my saved passwords. I have since uninstalled Google Chrome from my browser as I see no need to clutter my computer with two chromium browsers. I use Firefox as my default browser and Edge as my backup browser.

I am still getting the same error message. Here is the screenshot

I have tried to paste a screen shot but that doesn't seem to work here,

No, you can't paste images. But you can upload a screenshot using the Insert image ![](https://learn-attachment.microsoft.com/api/attachments/bf2f09e6-092e-42af-adc5-3c16dfcb34c9?platform=QnA tool in the reply box. Instructions here: How to include a screenshot in your post - Microsoft Community

Since this is the most likely cause of the problem you're facing ("not remembering passwords is not just Edge, it's also with Windows and Office"), we should really follow this process to the end to fix it for you while we wait for the Windows update.

    Hi Alex

I assume you are a MS employee  so thanks for getting involved.

If you read the reply trails, previous respondents have confirmed there are two problems - one with Windows and one with Edge.

My start point is that I have huge difficulty trying to understand why millions of ordinary users who do not have IT departments have to waste untold hours trying to sort out problems caused by MS.  There is an excellent business mantra - sort out the basics first. MS is garnering no goodwill by issuing updates and then not helping to sort out the problems they cause. This is MS's problem not the many helpful supporters.

The fundamental point I would like to register is that all these problems started with update 2004, compounded by the new version of Edge. Until then life was good !

    Looking at your reply.

Yes I am on build 19042.662 with 20H2.

I have tried the powershell suggestion several times - all I get is an error message 'system cannot find the file/folder'

I have disabled my third party security software (Malwarebytes) but that makes no difference.

And no,  not remembering passwords is not just Edge, it's also with Windows and Office. For example Windows is deleting my saved Outlook 2010 password despite my going thru the repair and/or change procedures.

Please can you escalate this within MS for the benefit of the many who are pretty frustrated.

    Thank you

    Hi folks,

    For system-wide password issues:

If Microsoft Edge is the only place your passwords are not saving:

    • Check your 'Clear browsing data on close' page
      • Disable 'Hosted app data' if enabled
      • Disable 'Passwords' if enabled
    • Check for third party extensions that may be causing the issue
    • Uninstall third-party security software (ensuring that Windows Defender is re-enabled before proceeding)
    • If none of the above resolves the issue check edge://histograms/oscrypt for error reports after experiencing a  loss of credentials
      • Open the page, then visit a site where you expect the credentials to be missing despite having asked for them to be saved, then click Refresh on the Histograms page.

(Credit and thanks to ¡Firedog for most of the troubleshooting above)

Thank you for your input. Appreciated.

I have re-run powershell several times precisely as you suggest and get the same error message - "cannot find the file specified". I have tried to paste a screen shot but that doesn't seem to work here, only if I use email.

Your last comment doesn't fill me with joy. How are the millions of ordinary punters going to cope with errors and bugs created by MS. It's so frustrating when we don't have IT departments or the level of expertise that you have. If you have any influence or contact within MS please pass on how frustrated ordinary users are. Rant over.

    Best wishes
