Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

We understand your concern as you would like to change the default app for PDF file from Edge to Adobe.

In this scenario, we would suggest you to perform these methods and check.

Method 1: Change the setting for Apps

  1. Press Windows + I key to launch Windows Settings.
  2. Click on Apps and select Default apps from the left pane.
  3. Now scroll down and click on Choose default apps by file type.
  4. Scroll and look for .pdf, .pdxml, and .pdx file type, then click on the + sign to change it to Adobe Reader.

Method 2: Stop opening PDF file if you are using New Edge Chromium.

  1. Open Microsoft Edge
  2. Click on the three dots (…) from the right top corner.
  3. Select Settings from the drop down and click on Site permissions from the left pane.
  4. Scroll down and click on PDF documents, Toggle the switch to On for Always open PDF files externally.

Notes: If the Always open PDF files externally is on then if you try to open any online PDF document, it will prompt you to download and later you can use Adobe Reader to view.

Aditya Roy

Adobe Acrobat professional is not changing the default app.

It was in 2018 that Windows tightened up the file association protection measures that you seem to be running into. I can't find documentation for this, but versions newer than Acrobat Pro DC 18 shouldn't be doing this. It's likely that Acrobat Pro 2017 writes to registry keys that only users are allowed to change (by using the default apps settings available).

Could it be that you're using an older version of Acrobat?

    Hi

    Regards

    Don Henry

The information sounds fine but I need to be able to create PDFs and have ability to create and edit as necessary. You have to pay for that one, the Adobe Acrobat DC at ($22.99 monthly/$12.99 monthly billed annually)  I already paid for Power PDF Standard  ($99.00 no yearly renewal required) In other words, I own it!  It works well for my needs as I do residential design and drafting.  PDFs I create and those that I receive are many.  The ability to do many things and without having to renew yearly is my preferred way.  It just doesn't make sense that Microsoft Edge PDF allows me to go into apps and find the .pdf extensions,  I can select apps by file type and then change the program that I want to open my PDFs.  Nuance Power PDF is on that list in the new popup window!

What I didn't know Don and I am very glad you responded with the suggestion is that Adobe Acrobat DC has many more advantages than Nuance Power PDF Standard.   I thank you for making me aware of this. Now if using Adobe will stop wasting my time and stay on as a default for my PDF's I am all for it! I don't need the one that works with Mac.

I may be dumb but if a program allows the ability for you to change what opens a PDF, you would think that they would stop creating frustration and anger at making us do, daily, change the default app to allow what we choose and keep that as a DEFAULT!!

So thanks Don, I acquired the Adobe Acrobat DC....I think this will work out great even though I am stuck doing a monthly or yearly payment plan.  It just seems on deals like this, you are held hostage!

Your item 4 doesn't appear in Edge settings. Please comment on the fact that Microsoft has placed a DLL and XML files inside Windows, that overwrites the users default selections and changes the PDF and Photo default apps back to MS Edge and MS Photo.

So far, Microsoft hasn't answered this question. They have created a monster in MS Edge, tying it to the OS, using the OEMDefaultAssociations.xml file. Here's the code that changes everyone's default selection to the one Microsoft wants us to use:

     <Association Identifier=".pdf" ProgId="AppXd4nrz8ff68srnhf9t5a8sbjyar1cr723" NewBrowserProgId="MSEdgePDF" ApplicationName="Microsoft Edge" ApplyOnUpgrade="true" OverwriteIfProgIdIs="AppXk660crfh0gw7gd9swc1nws708mn7qjr1;AppX86746z2101ayy2ygv3g96e4eqdf8r99j" />

Thanks for your help and insight!
