Introducing link format, a new copy and paste feature in Microsoft Edge!

When copying and pasting URLs from Microsoft Edge, the URL will now be pasted in a friendly, readable link format by default. The link uses the page title as the link text and uses the full URL you copied as the link’s destination. We believe this makes the URLs you share easier to read, understand, and find again later.

If on occasion you would like to paste the full, plain text URL, that is still available. Right-click where you would like to paste and in the new Paste as menu, select Plain text. Alternatively you can use the shortcut key Ctrl+Shift+V.

If you would rather change the default URL copy and paste format back to plain text, you can do that as well. Visit the Share, copy & paste page in Microsoft Edge settings (you can get there easily by typing edge://Settings/ShareCopyPaste in the address bar) and select the Plain text option.

Finally, we’d love to hear from you! Here are some questions about this feature we’d love for you to answer:

  1. Do you find the friendly link format helpful?
  2. Is the ability to occasionally paste the full, plain text URL a good solution for you?
  3. Do you prefer the full, plain text URL format when you copy and paste all the time?
  4. If you prefer the full, plain text URL format, were you able to find the settings to change the default without the assistance of this or other articles?
  5. Do you have any other feedback about this feature you’d like to share with us?

Thank you!

Finally, we’d love to hear from you! Here are some questions about this feature we’d love for you to answer:

    1. Do you find the friendly link format helpful?

    Yes, very.

    1. Is the ability to occasionally paste the full, plain text URL a good solution for you?

    Yes.

    1. Do you prefer the full, plain text URL format when you copy and paste all the time?

No. I use the friendly format almost all the time.

    1. If you prefer the full, plain text URL format, were you able to find the settings to change the default without the assistance of this or other articles?

    I don't, but I found the option anyway😉

    1. Do you have any other feedback about this feature you’d like to share with us?

    (a) Where a text-entry field allows for links (like the input editor at this site), I was happy to discover that either option works in the Insert hyperlink control.

    (b) I can't work out why the friendly link sometimes appends the page domain - e.g. (microsoft.com) -to the displayed text and sometimes it doesn't. On the whole, I find it almost always superfluous, and I usually end up deleting it anyway, having discovered that this has no effect on the underlying URL.

    (c) It was also good to find that even ridiculously long fragments usually make it through the prettifying process, like this one:
