Microsoft Edge keeps making itself the default PDF viewer instead of acrobat

I understand that you are having trouble with Microsoft Edge constantly becoming the default PDF viewer instead of Adobe Acrobat. This can be a frustrating issue, but there are a few steps you can take to try and resolve it.

1. Open Adobe Acrobat and go to Edit > Preferences > General. Under the section labeled "Basic Tools," select "Set as Default PDF Handler."
2. Go to Windows Settings > Apps > Default Apps. Under the "Choose default apps" section, locate the entry for Microsoft Edge and click on it. Select "Choose defaults for this program" and then uncheck the box next to "PDF."
3. If the above steps do not work, you can try resetting your default apps to the Windows default. Go to Windows Settings > Apps > Default Apps, and click "Reset" under "Reset to the Microsoft recommended defaults."

It appears Edge created a second entry for .pdf, which after reboot or just the next day takes over, even though one was still set to Adobe Acrobat.

I just changed the 2nd one manually - we'll see if it holds.

Hi! On my version of Adobe Acrobat this selection is not available in Basic Tools. I do see under Application Startup (also in General) that there is a button "Select as Default PDF Handler" but it is grayed out. Right below it there is a checkbox that is selected "Tell me if Adobe Acrobat Reader is not my default PDF application." So basically all it does is open in Microsoft Edge every time and just notifies me to make Edge the default application. It clearly is showing that adobe should be opening the file, but still adobe does not.

There are numerous threads about this around the web, and nobody from Microsoft ever replies to the customer observation that their suggestion DOES NOT WORK. Why don't they admit that Microsoft has set this up intentionally?
