Microsoft Edge keeps making itself the default PDF viewer instead of acrobat

This is a dup thread for one that was started in 2020. Same stuff is still happening. I'm about 5 minutes from uninstalling Edge. If my PC reboots, Edge takes over PDFs. So annoying

    Interesting. I must be amognst the few lucky ones for whom it has not changed back to Edge.

    This solution worked for a few weeks and looked very promising at first but then Edge took over again.. I'm not sure if it was an update that broke my setting or something else.

    All the useless MS offered solutions last for an hour at most!

    MS have to fix this. It is not acceptable for software, especially a program that you can't get rid of or disable, to override user set preferences like this.

    This works for me but then reverts when Edge reopens.

    I've got the GPO setting, Intune, and personal setting all set to Adobe, but Edge is insistent and overwriting my settings everytime.

    Interesting. I've not seen that happen. I wonder what's different?

    Mohammed Al Sabbagh posted an answer on May 2 which sounds promising. If you try it, please tell us whether it works for you.

    Thanks Manoj,

    I used a similar fix, I ended Edge and all associated processes in Task Manager, and was then able to set my default PDF back to Acrobat.

    This is still an issue as Edge can reclaim the default and you have to do the same process, it's also frustrating for me as an IT manager when all my employees devices have the same issue regardless of Policy or Intune settings!

    Hopefully Microsoft can fix Edge, I moved away from Chrome as it was a superior experience but Chrome is looking tempting again...

    Not sure if some of you have gone through the full thread. We found a fix to this a while back and I had put it in a post, but RubenVan den Broeck laid out the steps better than I had. Here is what he wrote:

    1. Go to Add or Remove programs2. Look up Edge, click Modify, then Repair3. Then go to default app settings, change PDF to something else (Windows now lets you do that while Edge is reparing)4. Cancel the Edge repair process5. The default app for pdf is now changed.
