Microsoft Edge keeps making itself the default PDF viewer instead of acrobat

Hi! On my version of Adobe Acrobat this selection is not available in Basic Tools. I do see under Application Startup (also in General) that there is a button "Select as Default PDF Handler" but it is grayed out. Right below it there is a checkbox that is selected "Tell me if Adobe Acrobat Reader is not my default PDF application." So basically all it does is open in Microsoft Edge every time and just notifies me to make Edge the default application. It clearly is showing that adobe should be opening the file, but still adobe does not.

It appears Edge created a second entry for .pdf, which after reboot or just the next day takes over, even though one was still set to Adobe Acrobat.

I just changed the 2nd one manually - we'll see if it holds.

Not sure if this will work for everyone, but this is what I did after everything else failed:

Control Panel>Programs and Features> Select Microsoft Edge - Click on change ("Uninstall" is not an option that is offered). Then repair.

While the change/repair is underway, do this:
Settings>Apps>Default apps>Adobe Acroboat - click on .pdf and change to Adobe Acrobat as default.
... and it worked!

I hope it does not for the rest of you too.

FYI - not a nerd, so, please don't shoot me for trying to help. I rummaged through several sites first, and tried everything that was suggested and failed.

Wow, I think this has actually worked!

I did this a couple of days ago and Acrobat is still the default app for PDFs. Previously Edge would have hijacked this again after an hour or so!

I just wanted to say that this solution does not work. Edge forces itself to being the PDF handler.

I will be writing a complaint to the appropriate anti-competitive body so that hopefully there is some pressure on Microsoft to fix this.

Hell yes! This worked. I hate microsoft edge. It's super annoying how they force us to use their ****.
