Hello JosephPare1,

I'm John an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you. I'll be happy to assist you today. I understand you have a problem with Edge opening automatically at startup. Did you made any changes recently? When was the last time it was working properly?

Kindly try the suggested methods below.

Solution

  1. Go to Start  > Settings .
  2. Select Accounts > Sign-in options.
  3. Turn off Automatically save my restartable apps when I sign out and restart them when I sign in

Other options:

  1. Press Start then search Settings > Apps > Startup > Please try to turn everything off. Check if Edge will no longer start automatically.
  2. Kindly check if you're using Windows Spotlight in your lock screen. Once you click Edge, it will automatically search for any word that you click after unlocking the device. It's recommended to change your lock screen settings.

I've been having the same problem and none of the settings changes worked for me.

After much searching, I found these instructions:

I am no longer plagued by Microsoft Edge.

Edge version 97.0.1072.62 contains the fix and will be installed per your regular update policies over the next day or so. If you'd like to force the update immediately, you can head over to edge://settings/help in the address bar or Settings > About Microsoft Edge and trigger the update manually.

If you've made any registry edits or GPO changes as mitigation, you can revert those after the update!

I still have to make sure that my cursor is not hovering over the center of the screen, where one of the pre-login screen messages is, when I click it to bring up the login screen, as that does open Edge.

When waking up the computer from sleep...

Press any key on your keyboard, EXCEPT the 'space bar', seems the space bar opens up Edge by default from sleep.

In the end this is what did the trick:

Go to Lock Screen Settings. In the Background drop down, select either Picture or Slideshow. Choose your picture.

Done.

The Windows Spotlight option is what starts up Edge.

Thank you for replying to my question: **"How to get my former Xfinity screen when signing in.**" I got it back! although it's changed somewhat in appearance from what we are used to.

After spending a few hours on my computer making changes suggested by my son and daughter-in-law, it thankfully returned.

I hate EDGE.! It took over my computer and my husband was very upset when suddenly everything was different and he couldn't sign in.

I didn't use your suggestions, but I appreciate your help. Sincerely, Lolly Volpe

I'm not sure that the answer above was correct. I'm running Edge 97.0.1072.76 which I think is the one which has corrected the problem?

Then your Edge is newer that the version that reportedly resolved the issue. Do you still have the problem?

    Don

No - I no longer have the problem. But initially I used Cry111's suggestion posted on 8th January which worked for me after nothing else did. Having tried many things which made no difference, I then went back and reversed all my changes except the task scheduler items which I kept disabled.

However once I updated my version of Edge to 97.0.1072.62 I discovered that the task 'MicrosoftEdgeUpdateTaskMachineUA' could be re-enabled (which I did) but the task 'MicrosoftEdgeUpdateTaskMachineCore' could NOT be re-enabled and I presumed that was because of the fix applied. I have just checked just now and in 97.0.1072.76 the task 'MicrosoftEdgeUpdateTaskMachineCore' is once again enabled, which I didn't do Manually so presumably a further 'fix' was applied between then and now? No recurrence of the issue with Edge so far for me

I should also say that my issue only started with the Edge update which occured around 6th January whereas for others this problem is of longer standing. I reported it as Feedback to the Edge team too. I am running W11 and am on the insider programme (Beta) Channel - does that mean I also have a more up to date Edge than non-insider users?
