WHY am I being FORCED to deal with Microsoft edge?

This is insane. I woke up, turned my pc on and see that while my computer updated Microsoft sneakily installed a new version of edge. The icing on the cake, however, is that my system's screen was commandeered by an unclosable presentation forcing me to watch a slow and meticulous explanation of all of the changes you've made to my system that I never asked for and want nothing to do with.

This behavior is doing the opposite of what your company wants to happen. These forceful tactics do not make anyone want to use your service and immediately make you a nuisance and enemy to the user. It's as if you as a company feel your users are going to be too stupid to notice this change or too lazy to go back to using their original browser and just passively accept the changes you've made. We're not cattle. We make our own decisions. 

So here I am, taking up my time and energy trying to change things BACK to the way I had them, on the computer I pay a lot of money to own and maintain.

    Yes, I suppose it could be.

    Are Microsoft committing an offence? 

    No, because their action is covered by the licence agreement you entered into to allow you to use Windows. To see it, press Windows key + Rto open a Run box, type winver and press Enter. You should see there a link to the agreement you have with Microsoft. Have a look at §6. 

    That's how you gave 'owner's permission' to update the software covered by the agreement.

    It's uncontrollable and therefore dangerous. 

    In what way do you think it's uncontrollable? If you choose to use it, the configuration options are legion. If you choose not to use it, you need never see it again* (until you need it to enable you to download a different browser, that is).

    *  Caveat: please see the post immediately preceding yours. Windows itself also has myriad configuration options, so a virgin installation will have the default settings. These include the default web browser, which is Edge. If you choose to use a different browser and set it as the default, that user choice will be respected. If a program comes along and alters that choice, Windows will stop it and revert to its default. The choice has to be yours, not some (interfering and potentially malicious) application's.

    You did give permission when you agreed to the terms and conditions of your license at the time of install of Windows 10. You own your computer but, Microsoft owns Windows 10 and the right to distribute ,when, where, and how they deem best.

    Hi - can I point something out? If Microsoft have installed something on a privately owned computer, without the owner's permission, isn't this equivalent to hacking? Are Microsoft committing an offence? I've asked a friend of mine (my Member Of Parliament) to bring this up at PMQs as soon as possible. Meanwhile I will continue trying to remove Edge from my laptop - I didn't ask for it, and I don't want it. It's uncontrollable and therefore dangerous.

    Windows is insisting that you the user make the choice of which browser to use by default. It will not - in the interests of user choice - allow applications (like third-party browsers) to alter your own preference.

    Click Start and select Settings, then Apps. Under Default apps, select the web browser you want to use.

    You may have to repeat this exercise if an application tries to change the setting in the future.

    I am disgusted at Microsoft.  I try to use Skype this morning after their dodgy update and it will now not allow me to use it on my favourite browser but is forcing me to use Edge browser which I do  not want to do.

    Is there an easy way to bypass Edge to use Skype ?
