Edge keeps freezing up.

My Microsoft Edge browser keeps freezing up. I have tried all the suggested solutions with no success. I like the design and functionality offered by Edge, but will change to Firefox until I get a notice that Microsoft has fixed the problem with Edge freeze ups.

    Have suffered freezing over the last 4-5 weeks progressively more often simply browsing standard pages, 

    What are the symptoms of this 'freeze'?

    I sometimes find that a page becomes unresponsive to mouse clicks or keypresses. When this happens, I find that a right-click on the title bar (which is directed to Windows, not Edge) is usually enough to spark the page into life. If it isn't, selecting Browser task manager from the control menu works to free up the page.

    Before dismissing the BTM, I check to see what the GPU process is up to. If it's consuming more than about 100MB of memory, I end the process, which causes it to restart and behave properly again.

    YMMV, of course.

    64bit 16GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650

    Only Bus apps

     Have suffered freezing over the last 4-5 weeks progressively more often simply browsing standard pages, like eBay, happens InPrivate as well as normal mode. Have to use task manager to end the process. 

    Happened 4 times today in the space of an hour

    PC had been rebooted after the 1st freeze, Hardware acceleration was off.

    3x extensions that I've used for some years. I use them in Firefox which gives no issues.

    This doesn't solve the touchscreen and touchpad input freeze issues.

    Hi Alex,

    Yesterday, in my default settings, the 'Use hardware acceleration when available' was on.  So, I switched it off, restarted Edge and no freeze-ups occurred for one full hour of browser use.  For a test, I switched the option back to 'on' and sure enough the freezing returned within 10 minutes. 

    Today, with the hardware acceleration toggled off, I have been using Edge for a little over three hours, as I write this reply, and have not experienced a single freeze-up at all.  I guess the freeze issue has been resolved.

    I have had the same issue for the past couple of weeks.  

    Both of my browsers (Chrome and Edge) were constantly freezing up at random times.  After 5-10 minutes, they would unlock, but this was highly annoying.  I tried everything suggested.  Disabled Add-ons, Cleared Cache, even went so far as to uninstall Chrome and reinstall from scratch.  NOTHING WORKED!!

    I finally saw the suggestion above to try turning off hardware acceleration in the browser settings.  After doing so, I have not had any additional freeze-ups with either browser.  (At least not for the past 8 hours.  Previously, they would freeze within a few minutes.)

    Granted, my CPU is very old in CPU years (about 10), so maybe the new version of windows/browsers in not compatible with my older hardware acceleration capabilities.

    Anyway, at least my browsers are usable again.  And I might be able to squeeze out a few more years before I break down and buy a new computer.
