How do I stop Edge from automatically opening on start up? Windows 10 Pro 64 20H2

This started for me this morning - very annoying !

I eventually stopped it by disabling a couple of scheduled update tasks.

1. Open Task Scheduler
2. Click on the first Tab > Task Scheduler Library
3. Disable MicrosoftEdgeUpdateTaskMachineCore
4. Disable MicrosoftEdgeUpdateTaskMachineUA

Reboot and hopefully the problem is stopped.

Edge works normally but you will need to do a manual update every now and then. Or re-enable the tasks and reboot to get back to auto update but with a return of the problem.

 I might be a little late with this advice, but I just came across this thread today. I was able to shut down Microsoft Edge on both my Windows 8.1 and 10 laptops. The 8.1 is a HP Envy x2 and the 10 is a HP Pavilion 14. All I did was go into the firewall settings and block Edge. That took care of most of it. If it still tries to open for some links or extensions, try checking the default settings and make sure it's not set for anything. Then disable "Bing" as your search engine. After I did that, Edge hasn't opened at all for the last six moths. Hopefully this helps some of you. Cheers.

Yes you can use "Autoruns" from SysInternals (once downloaded right click run as Administrator) to select & de-select choices.

In the "Scheduled Tasks section", I found "microsoftedgeupdate" entry for C:\program files (x86)\microsoft\edgeupdate 3x in my Scheduled Tasks .

Now I did run "DEV" but currently run BETA & Production versions of Chrome engine based Edge.

Originally it was the DEV build that was opening on log in.

When I uninstalled it started to open the Production version so I knew there was an association being called but not default browser because my BETA version is the default browser (even when I had all 3 versions installed).

If you look at the file, signed 2019 & originally placed in 2018 & it is also called as a "Delayed Auto Start service".

It would almost appear an entry from legacy Edge is conflicting with "new Chrome engine" Edge in the registry somewhere.

The "Delayed Start" service entry wouldn't trigger if you immediately logged in after reboot.

I unchecked all of them & it did stop the auto open on log in but I am curious which is being called to do so.

The masses will use Edge simply because it is always open on their desktop.

This problem affects just a few dozen users out of the hundreds of millions of Windows 10 users in the world. Edge is not designed to start automatically with Windows, so it will not be "always open on their desktop" for the great majority.

Edge continues to open regardless.

Not one PC, all 21 computers at my office and home.

If you are responsible for all these machines, you are in a good position to be able to find out what it is in their configuration that causes Edge to launch with Windows. As a business user, you should be able to submit a request for support, which will enable the Edge support staff to diagnose the problem you're facing and explain how to remedy it.
