Every time I boot up or restart my computer, Microsoft Edge automatically opens up. This has been happening ever since the new update for Microsoft Edge. How do I get it to stop?

Pardon me, but you are both wrong. (And you DO NOT want anything to do with IE❗) And stay out of the Registry❗

The following will solve your issue. Without silly talk of MS being criminal or lawsuits.

Edge is part of the OS, ergo, the default browser unless & until changed, in Settings.

    1. > Settings > Apps > Default apps. Scroll down to Web browser. Rt Clk & select the one wanted.
    2. > Settings > Apps > Startup. Find Microsoft Edge & put its toggle switch to OFF.

No and no. 1) Chrome was my default browser and 2) There is no Edge app in my startup. Yet STILL Edge opens on login.

HERE IS WHAT ACTUALLY WORKED FOR ME:

    1. Open Edge
    2. Go to Settings > System
    3. Toggle setting "Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed" OFF

    Hope that helps someone else.

Hi, my name is Neil, I'm an independent adviser and a Windows 10 user like you.

Sorry you're having this issue with Edge.

I see others who have this same issue and I think the easiest way to solve it is to make Chrome or Internet Explorer the default web browser. Of course you can still click on Edge and use Edge as your main browser, but this should stop the automatic loading of edge when you boot into Windows 10.

To make Chrome your default browser, do the following:

Press your Windows Key + I to open Settings.

    Click on Apps.

On the left hand side click on Default Apps.

Scroll down to Web browser and click on Microsoft Edge. Then click on either Chrome or Internet Explorer instead.

There are other methods of preventing Edge loading when you boot into Windows, but this depends on you having Windows 10 Pro and modifying the registry.

That's why changing the default browser is the easiest and safest method. On the next update for Edge this behaviour should hopefully stop and you can go back and make Edge your default browser again.

    I hope this helps.

No that doesn't st0p the EDGE Trojan Horse. Chrome is my default browser and CRIMINAL Microsoft wont allow me to stop Edge- the trojan program/virus. LAWSUIT is needed to stop this abuse.

Yes, punch cards for me, too, at that time.

Before I suggest what MAY solve this...

(I can't help myself)... since Edge is the Win10 default browser (kinship), since they are both built on the same platform and since Edge is the best of the 2 & has either better Features or better ways of doing things & cool Features Chrome does not have... why are you wanting Chrome to be the default?  Just kidding, it's all personal preference, of course.

Ok, anyway, look at these 2 things:

     > (OS) Settings > Apps > Default Apps.  Scroll down to Web browser & make sure it is, indeed, set to Chrome.

Suddenly I'm wondering if we are talking browsers or Home pages.

In Edge > ellipsis > Settings > On Start-up.  Look at what it is using. Select, Open specific page or pages. Hit Add page & make it Google.ca or .com.

Now, when Edge first opens it will open as or to google.  You can, also, designate your Home page to be google; that is under Edge Settings & Appearance.

Did you ever actually download & install the Chrome browser in your machine?

Sorry, I've become unsure if we are talking Google website or Chrome browser.  Of what I have said, take whatever may apply, if anything 😂🤷‍♂️ Maybe, something 🤞

UPDATE: I double checked what I wanted to see... I do think you are referring to Google coming up in Edge by default, not the Chrome browser.

    Is this right or wrong?

    Cheers,

So, Edge is (still) opening by itself after a reboot?

Ok, please, look at this...  (no promises, but) In Edge > ellipsis > Settings > On Start-up & don't have it on, Continue where you left off.

BTW, have seen something said to you earlier. You do not see other browsers available as the Default web browser unless they are installed.  Ergo to have Chrome or whichever other, listed, it would have to be downloaded & installed, already, 1st. And Internet Explorer will not be on that list, at all;  It is unsupported & obsolete.  Think of it this way... IE doesn't exist & carry on from there.

But there is no need to switch to a lesser browser to address your issue.

And I want to check a couple things for you, too...

    Cheers,

I'm sorry Drew, but just so there's no misunderstanding, my default browser is Google Chrome.

When I first startup, Microsoft Edge automatically opens. If I close that tab, Google Chrome opens. How do I make Google Chrome always open on initial startup?

Be patient. When I was a kid they still used punch cards.
