How do you disable "Trending now" in Edge search bar?

Plenty of questions on this and most seem to refer to older versions of Windows and/or Edge.

Using Windows 11 and Edge Version 107.0.1418.42 (Official build) (64-bit), both up to date.

As soon as I attempt to type in the search bar, a "Trending now" drop-down appears.

I've got everything turned off that anyone has ever suggested but I can't get rid of it as shown below.

After months of hoping someone would come up with an answer, I believe I found it. Under the Edge Settings, follow Privacy, search, and services, scroll to the bottom, select Address bar and search, select Search on new tabs uses search box or address bar, choose Address bar. DONE!

UPDATE: Right after posting this, I discovered on another Windows 11 machine that you can achieve the above on any other search engine as the default except Bing, but if you stick with the Search box (Recommended) on those other search engines, this will bring back the Bing Trending nonsense. Hope what I have discovered helps... a little.

What a pain, this isn't the only area I am dissatisfied with. Microsoft get your feces together and stop infecting what has been a good product, more or new is not necessarily better.

Thank you for your assistance! Your explanation was effective and resolved the issue. Regrettably, a significant amount of time was expended before this resolution was achieved.

As highlighted in your recent update, it is imperative to select a default search engine alternative to Bing. Utilizing the address bar for searches is essential to prevent the recurrence of unwanted Trending ****.

    Hi,

    not sure if I mentioned it earlier but all that is gone just by setting Edge to "InPrivate" as default ...no ads, no Hollywood gossip ... and also no running in the background issues. (which will take another couple of settings)

    Also...another work around is two posts above by HB8... scroll down in Privacy and set to Google and Address Bar ... you are still in Edge but ads and gossip is also gone.

    Of course, regardless, you have to go into the gear icon on the right (which is not there when InPrivate) and turn off all ads, weather, etc. The only thing you can't turn off there is the annoying drop-down list of gossip under the address bar.

    But again ... that's gone with InPrivate or with the suggestion above.

    To check out InPrivate window right click on the Edge icon in the task bar and select New InPrivate Window.

    To set it as default ... google it ... but it's very easy to do.

    Thanks. What a pain Edge/Bing is. I guess I'll have to just go back to Chrome/Google where you can actually turn stupid trending searches off. I so DON'T CARE what other people are searching for.

    Hi Everyone,

    I paste and copy this from my answer in "Edge keeps running..." since I found a solution that fixes both issues:

    I looks like I have found the solution... not only to "Edge keeps running..." but also to another post "How to stop the annoying "Trending Now" drop down under the search bar"

    I simply open Edge as "In Private" window. It solved both issues (at least for now)

    In regards to continuing background processes: I opened Edge with all kinds of websites, Youtube, Amazon, signed in, etc., ... Edge always closed immediately all processes in Task Manager!!! Up at the top and no background processes further down! I tested this for a while and always worked ... so far.

    At the same time the annoying Trending Now is gone as well. However, if someone likes all the ads, weather, sports, etc., news, this is not for you.

    The screen is just the plain background (gray in my case, as I like it.) and none of the news/ads are possible. Good!!

    However, there are a couple of permanent explanations about "In Private" and what it does.

    BTW: You can set the "In Private" window to open as default:

    right click Edge short cut icon on task bar > right click Edge > Properties > in the "Target" line add to the end of the path

    -in private (with a space between Default and the hyphen ..... Default -inprivate) > Apply > OK

    It can be reversed if you want to. I had this for a while and it works great. Clicking the shortcut now always opens In Private.

    I'll post this same answer also in the other post regarding "Stop Trending Now"
