How do I remove Microsoft Edge From Windows 10?

I've poked around and all threads on this question seem to have been locked. I'm not sure why we're forced to have edge installed if we don't want it. Can someone please provide exact instructions on how to remove Edge?

Hey there, everyone

Microsoft Edge cannot be uninstalled from Windows. This is because the browser is built into Windows - but gets updates separately from the Windows Update client. 

No matter which command you decide to run in PowerShell, this will not work. You can, of course, use an alternative browser. To do this, please download and install a browser of your choice though the Microsoft Store, or though the web browser. 

Once you launch the other web browser, such as Chrome, it will ask you if you want to make that browser a default browser. Once you select this, everything should open in Chrome, and not Edge. 

For those who are saying that Microsoft is forcing you to use Edge. You can use a different browser instead of Edge. Just like, if you were using an iPhone, you can install another browser instead of the built-in browser called Safari. Android systems have a built-in browser too, which cannot be uninstalled, but you are able to use a different browser too. 

Is this something new? No, browsers have always been built into the OS. Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10 have Internet Explorer which is built into the OS. Windows 8, 8.1, 10 also have Edge built in too.

    I don't use either Edge browser and probably never will. But I don't feel compelled to uninstall the default browser for Windows 10 simply because I don't care to use it. You can make any browser the default browser for Windows 10. If you don't know how to do this, Google it and you can easily find instructions on how to do so. I have used Windows forever and before Edge was Internet Explorer, I really did not use IE either but never felt the need to uninstall it. I don't see a issue with Edge sitting on a device and not being used. Its takes up little space and really poises no issues if you never use it. Maybe someone can explain the obsession with uninstalling Edge these days? I use IOS and Mac OS and both come with Safari browser and neither OS allows Safari to be uninstalled. I have frustrations with Windows 10 for sure, but getting rid of Edge is not one of them.

    14 -- When your O/S breaks in the future because you removed a key part of the system, don't forget you broke it by doing the previous 13 steps.

    What users should do is just download their preferred browser and make it the default. Once you do that you'll likely never see Edge again, so the issue becomes solved and you don't risk breaking your computer down the road.

    I was able to delete Edge from the SystemApps directory, here are the steps I performed - hope it works for you.

    1 -- Open a command prompt (cmd.exe) as an administrator.

    2 -- run explorer.exe to launch Windows Explorer (as an administrator).

    3 -- Navigate to C:\Windows\SystemApps.

    4 -- Rename Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe as Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe_old.

    5 -- Right click on the folder Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe_old and select properties.

    6 -- Select the "Security" tab at the top of the ACL box.

    7 -- Select the "Advanced" option.

    8 -- Under the "Permissions" tab, select the blue highlighted "Change" link next to the UAC Shield IF your administrative account is not the owner of the Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe_old folder.  IF your account is the owner, skip to step #11.

    9 -- Begin typing your administrator account name in the "Enter the object name to select (examples):" field box and select "Check Names".  If your account is recognized on your local domain, it will auto-populate the fully qualified name of your account object.

    10 -- Select OK to close the Select User or Group prompt.

    11 -- Back at the Permissions tab, select "Enable inheritance".

    12 -- Check the "Replace all child object permission entries with inheritable permission entries from this object" and then select apply.

    13 -- Finally, close out all UAC dialogue boxes and navigate back to C:\Windows\SystemApps\ in your explorer session and delete the Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe_old folder.

    ** NOTES **

    Ensure Edge isn't running (no active browser sessions) in Task Manager.

    If your Windows 10 account isn't recognized as an Administrator's account (privileged access), have the machine owner create an administrative account for you or simply perform these steps.

    Sometimes you will have to reopen Windows Explorer to read in the new folder edited Security permissions.
