Managing media playback issues and settings in Microsoft Edge on Windows 10
This browser is no longer supported.
Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support.
Hi
I've upgraded to chromium edge but now videos are autoplaying again. I had this disabled on classic Edge but can't work out how to do this on the new version.
I've set "Media autoplay" to "Limit" in the "Site Permissions" section of settings but this doesn't seem to have had any effect at all (yes, I've restarted Edge / Windows).
I had also had this problem with dev / beta builds of Edge but hadn't got around to chasing it up until it became my primary browser.
In particular it's annoying on the MSN new pages linked to from the new tab page in Edge when they all have autoplaying video.
Thanks

Why isn't there an option called "Block"?
You'll probably find that the block option has to be enabled. Copy the next line into the address bar and press Enter:
edge://flags/#edge-autoplay-user-setting-block-option
Once this flag is enabled, you should see Block on the autoplay options menu.

Hi Ash,

In the new Microsoft Edge, the option of automatic playback is limited.
However, you can install an extension like autoplayblocker from the Chrome web store to disable Autoplay. (You may have to enable extensions from other store).
This does not work!! Microsoft, you need to fix this flaw. My suggestion is to let us decide if we want to turn auto play on not whether we want to turn it off!! Stop trying to control us and let the people decide what they want or need. Leave us alone.
Go to edge://flags
Type autoplay
Change from "default" to "allow" user to set
Go to settings in edge browser
Under "autoplay," the options will now be: allow, limit, block
Pick block
Viola!!
I've given you a fix. I completely understand how frustrating it is when browsers don't give you the options you want. Most of them can be "tweaked" if you are willing to dive into the hidden settings.
Microsoft has angered me to no end with things like forcing apps I can't uninstall on my Samsung Galaxy phone, and I won't defend them on that point, but when it comes to browsers, there are LOTS of them out there. You aren't required to use Edge or any other browser for that matter. No one is trying to control you just because you don't like how their browser works. If you don't like the new Edge browser, just use a different one. It's not that hard....
Looks like the autoplay-user-setting-block setting has been completely removed from edge://flags as of 10Oct2020 as I sit here TOTALLY FRUSTRATED WITH MICROSOFT for forcing these #$%@^%$@!@#~ videos to be played no matter the "Limit" option or even deselecting Autoplay within the specific video which is supposed to "Limit" future videos from being played.
Way to go Microsoft. I'm a former MSFT'ee and have completely stopped using Edge because of one incessant, stupid decision to force videos on their customers. If I wish to watch a video I WILL CLICK TO WATCH THE VIDEO!!
I don't need Microsoft dictating I need to watch every video created on the internet. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
