Microsoft made disabling this feature such a chore, and navigating settings didn't help one bit. I figured I'd ask on the forums before ditching edge all together.

when your on the home page click on the page settings button in the top right corner there will be a section saying quick links just click on the open in a new tab to off and that will fix it
I'm having the same issues as described below. Is there a fix for this because its really annoying.
I don't have that option under Customise Browser or anything under Appearance. I have Windows 11 Home Insider Preview version 22H2.
I had the same issue and this is what worked for me.
I followed the first solution
Open Edge browser then go to https://www.bing.com/#!
2. Click the three-line menu at the upper-right corner of the page.
3. Select Settings > More.
4. On the next page uncheck both "Open links from search results in a new tab or window" and "Open links from news results in a new tab or window" under the Results option.
5. Click Save then Exit Edge.
After that, I opened an email in Outlook and clicked a link to take me to a website. It opened in Edge but with a pop up. I went to “manage settings” on that pop up and selected “Use System Default” (Google Chrome). They are now opening in Chrome for me instead of Edge.

The issue has nothing to do with a search of any kind. I have the same problem as of recently. It doesn't seem to me that anyone here is explaining this issue properly. I can be on any open internet site such as Amazon. And when I click on any task such as simply clicking on the arrow to change from one picture of a given product to another picture, I get a new tab that pops up showing the Amazon home page. Another example: I use MSN as my home page and when I click on the arrow to advance from one news topic in the main windowpane to another news topic, I get a new tab that opens showing some other irrelevant internet page. I do not use Bing as my default search engine. So, it has nothing to do with Bing. This nuisance has only been happening for about two weeks as of 12/09/23. I believe it started after a recent MS edge update. This is a MS Edge software issue that needs to be resolved quickly! This is a true aggravation!
