Remove "Start back up" option in file explorer

Hello,

In the latest release of Windows Insider Home Preview (I have an option everywhere I go in file explorer to "Start Back Up", clicking on it leads me to the onedrive dialogue to back up folders. This is incredibly annoying and I cannot find out how to disable it, even though all my backup features are off.

How can I disable this?

I was able to get rid of the button like this:

  1. Open RegEdit
  2. Go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StorageProvider\OneDrive
  3. Remove or rename the key StorageProviderKnownFolderSyncInfoSourceFactory
  4. Restart Windows Explorer

    Files is working well and when contacted they helped me restore File Explorer.

    They have the code to disable File Explorer and replace with Files which works well.

    I haven't gotten completely used to the new interface but once I am I can and will disable File Explorer. It will still be there and supposedly will be accessed by microsoft programs but Files opens when I selected the File Explorer shortcut pinned to the taskbar.

    I hope this isn't too far off topic, but a couple of days ago I saved a Word document to my desktop (which is not backed up to Onedrive, depite the MS nags). Word immediately produced a bright orange pop-up telling me to link the Desktop folder to Onedrive for backup purposes.

    In other words, MS has stepped up its campaign to push people into linking Desktop / Documents etc to Onedrive, by adding prompts to Office applications. I submitted feedback on this, but I doubt if they will take any notice.

    I am a Onedrive user, but don't I want to put folders outside the Onedrive tree on Onedrive. This seems to be beyond MS's comprehension.

    Both Word and Excel nag me for OneDrive for each and every document open.

    I have both Word and Excel settings set to save BY DEFAULT into a Local folders, but it still

    • nags me to back them up to one drive and
    • when I create a new document and then do a Save As, it defaults to OneDrive - Personal (not backup, but still OneDrive rather than my local folder specified in settings

    It's very disappointing.

    And I'm trying to decide on why I'm sticking with MS Office rather than Google Docs and Sheets.

    Going to the original question, I never see it. I don't know if it is because I keep the link always active, phone link, as a second factor Google verification, so once checked in, and as long as I always enter my pin if it's needed, then, my back up goes auto, when whenever it needs to and I am not using too much of the PC, but those were also options I choose myself
