Remove "Start back up" option in file explorer

Hello,

In the latest release of Windows Insider Home Preview (I have an option everywhere I go in file explorer to "Start Back Up", clicking on it leads me to the onedrive dialogue to back up folders. This is incredibly annoying and I cannot find out how to disable it, even though all my backup features are off.

How can I disable this?

I was able to get rid of the button like this:

  1. Open RegEdit
  2. Go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StorageProvider\OneDrive
  3. Remove or rename the key StorageProviderKnownFolderSyncInfoSourceFactory
  4. Restart Windows Explorer

    Given that this whole new OneDrive-driven feature set is probably meant to sell Cloud Storage to those that go past their free allotment, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that this 'lack of choice of folders' is very much by design.

    I think we'd all be happy IF we could select which folders to backup. But MS doesn't give you that option. If I try to backup just one folder in the Documents folder, a popup asks permission and tells me I'll be over my limit (because it will back up the whole Documents folder).

    Why can't MS be more responsive?

    Surely the customer is always right. No?

    Btw button disappears if you sign out of Onedrive. 

    Signing out of OneDrive is a) not a solution, especially for those of us that still use it (though not for backup), and b) probably not something that Microsoft would want users to do (since they want us to use OneDrive for backup).

    So I would think in both cases, they would want this issue resolved with a fix, not a work-around.

    That was a comment of a user on reddit. I don't see the "Start Backup" button in any of my systems. 😎🤷‍♂️

    FYI: In respect to the comment that this is not a OneDrive issue, I've been discovering a host of other Windows apps/components that are trying to get users to use OneDrive for backup. See the following image for a prompt in Excel to schedule a backup to OneDrive.

    This thread is about the button in "Start Backup" Windows Explorer and how it's positioned in any annoying locations, one that sometimes interrupts the functionality of the address bar in Windows Explorer.

    But it's clear to me from indications elsewhere in windows that this is a marketing move in the area of cloud storage. At least in Excel, I can click the close 'x' (not shown) at the far right of the yellow bar. I don't know if there's a way to tell Excel to stop showing me the backup option at all times, but a quick search on the web shows that this is just as much a mystery as the Windows Explorer button.

    We should all be unhappy with Microsoft's foisting this on us without the ability to disable it.
