You are right, I do temp file cleanup only for Dev channel builds or after full feature updates, not CU's.

I tried Uninstalling kb5000842 from .906 and it took it back to .899 , it still showed that I could Uninstall kb5000842 from .899, but it failed when I tried to do it, while when I tried earlier before going up with the updates to .906 it worked and took it back to .867.

But it failed in this case after both updates were applied, see the message below, I assume that is the error BilliaZ was referring to ?

Anyway at this point I tried to W.U. again to get back up to .906 and sure enough it came back with the 0x800f081f error.

Perhaps the sequence of updates changed something in the Windows Update Cleanup folder and recreated the condition for the error.

There is sure something wrong with these updates.  😜 

I'll be waiting for the next update to see if they fix these situations properly.

Not only on 21H1 to 21H1 updates, but also 20H2 to 21H1 updates.

I have get impression that about 4-6 years old computers act better with Insider Previews than new computers?

My machines are a mixture of old and new and they behaved the same in this case with error  0x800f081f .

I wonder if removing the System>Storage>Temporary files "Windows Update Cleanup" ,besides removing the Uninstall capability for some updates, could also be the cause of the error when they reuse the same kb#  (kb5000842) for both .899 and .906 ?

I don't remember if I did a cleanup after installing .899, but it is quite possible given that it takes several GB.

I think I just proved my theory, leaving the "Windows Update Cleanup" alone allowed W.U. to update from .899 to .906 without the error 0x800f081f.

Looks like that is the bug, it should not need that folder to update to the next version of kb5000842.

When they release the fix I still have a backup of the failing one to verify that it works.
