Steam client broken after updating to Windows Tech Preview Build 9879

It would appear that the latest build of the windows technical preview has caused some serious stability issues for Steam users.

As we all know, this is a big reason why many people use Windows for their desktop PC. To stably play games =)

I ask that the Microsoft  OS engineers please try to track down whatever changes they've introduced with this latest build so that we can once again  have the ability to use Steam.

Symptoms: While playing games via steam ( including the two most widely played steam games, Dota2 and CS:GO ) the steam client will randomly crash. The process will completely die and there will be no trace left in the steam client application logs. As a result of steam dying your game will almost instantly end as well. This issue is present in both Steam and steam beta clients.

I hope there is a solution here. Granted this is a free technical preview, but for me it just became a lot less useful.

    Well steamservice.exe is causing The crash, and any game that does not rely on that process can be played without crashes after you disable/delete steamservice.exe. I know for a fact that VAC uses it, thats why you cant delete og disable it for games that uses VAC. Other games _might_ work, especially singleplayer games. Non-VAC games crashes without steamservice as well, I know, but not all.

    so if you play some obscure singleplayer game on steam, disabling or deleting steamservicr.exe _might_ fix Your problem. I play CSS/CSGO so I dual boot win 8.1 for now :)

    and no, its not The bootstrapper, its first steamservice.exe that crashes, then bootstrapper(steam.exe) and then Your game.

    perhaps they secretly fixed?

    Is anyone still having these issues where it consistently crashes?

    I was able to play for an extended time last night as well and started thinking the same thing.

    It would, however, be nice for a confirmation from Microsoft that something was actually changed and we weren't just "getting lucky".

    Essentially this is breaking any game that uses Steam's VAC authentication.

    Including but not limited to:

    Counter-strike: Global Offensive

    Counter-strike: Source

    Counter-strike

    Half life 2 Deathmatch

    Team Fortress 2

    Day of Defeat Source

    Fistful of Frags

    Call of Duty: Modern warfare 2

    Call of Duty: Modern warfare 3

    Dota 2

    many Half life Mods

    many Source mods

    It has nothing to do with VAC. It also happens to occur to non-vac games like Americas Army PG or Assetto Corsa or... a load of others. For some reason it did not occur to me yet with UT2004 which is a single core dx9b game which is not making use of any Steam proces during the play except from the ingame overlay.

    Steam Client Bootstrapper is causing the issue. It crashes and with that it takes down all games that are running under it.

    Opting into the beta however this morning helped. So far no crash in about 8 hours.
