Yes. I agree. Somehow the update messed up the recovery image installed as well. That defeated the purpose of having the recovery image to boot to.
What worked for me was to use the recovery from the installation CD/USB. However, when trying to remove updates or startup repair, they all still said failed or could not repair but somehow the update is gone after a few reboot. I was trying many things with command prompt as well. One or combination of things I tried worked but not sure which one.
