Random freezes and black screen on WIndows 11

Hi,

I recently downloaded Windows 11 on my laptop and for the first 3 days, everything went smoothly with no issues. After that, everything went down hill. I'm starting to experience random freezes as well as black screen. I have no choice but to do a hard reboot to get my laptop up and running again. The freezes and sometimes black screen happens randomly. Sometimes, it only occur once a day, other days 3 times and today, it happened about 6 times. I have no idea what might caused this issue because on the Event Viewer, it didn't tell me much. And on the Reliability Report, it just says that the device was turned off unexpectedly. I can confirm that the temperature is not the issue. And there's nothing wrong with the hardware as well because this issue I encountered with Windows 10 as well. I've sent my laptop to the store 3 times to see if there's anything wrong with the hardware but the store couldn't find anything wrong with it.

Here's what I did to try to fix this issue:

  1. I ran sfc / scannow to see if there's any corrupted files. Found nothing.
  2. I ran dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth. Didn't fix it.
  3. Uninstalled the updates and then reinstalled the updates. Didn't fix it.
  4. I've updated every drivers that I have.
  5. I tried to reset the PC but for some reason, the reset button doesn't work.
  6. Tried it on safe mode. Laptop froze on safe mode as well.
  7. Deleted Logitech Hub, thinking it could be the issue. But, didn't fix it either.
  8. Disabled fast start-up in BIOS.

I could be gaming, or browsing the internet or even left the laptop on idle, it would either freeze or the screen would go black, or both.

Here's my device:

MSI GS63 8RE STEALTH, NVIDIA GTX 1060, INTEL 8TH GEN CORE i7-8750H

6GB of GDDR5

16GB DDR4

Here's the Reliability Report screenshot that I took.

"...I can say it's not the temperature because I just applied a new paste about 8 months ago. So, the paste is good. ..."

    Hi.

This is a fairly new laptop, I believe, and you say you replenished the thermal paste.

Why did you apply a new thermal paste ? What was the reason ? Did you have an overheating phenomenon before ?

Anyway, do you have any third party antimalware installed ?

How did you upgrade to Windows 11 ? Were you on the Windows Insider Program before or did you download Windows 11 from unofficial sources ?

    Hope this helps.

    Hi,

You're right. I bought this laptop back in 2019. The reason why I replenished the thermal because I had this freezing and black screen issue ever since Windows 10 version 1909. Previous versions were running just fine until version 1909. Since then, any update that was rolled out didn't fix the issue at all. At first, I thought the issue will be fixed after an update was pushed out. But, no. It didn't fix it at all. So, that's when I decided to send it back to the store where I bought it and had them see if there's any issue with the hardware. The first time I sent it back to the store was because there was an issue with the screen. The backlight was dead so they replaced the screen and everything was good. Few months later, Windows 1909 came out and I updated my laptop as usual and I have issues since then.

After multiple times of uninstalling and reinstalling Windows, I decided to send it back for the second time. The store reinstalled a fresh windows for me and within 48 hours, the issue came back. So, I sent it back again for the 3rd time. This time, I asked them to double check on the hardware like the motherboard, battery etc. Nothing was wrong and they tried reinstall Windows again. That same week, the issue came back. So I decided to fix it myself. Since I do a little bit of gaming, I'm thinking, maybe the paste had dried up. That's why I decided to repaste it. At this point, I just try everything I could because I wasn't sure what was the actual problem. I even bought a new battery just in case. But didn't fix it either.

I don't have any third party anti-malware installed. Just the Windows 10 Defender. I mostly game on my laptop and all the games I downloaded are from legit websites. I paid for those games.

I did sign up for the Windows Insider Program and it was my first time and that's how I got Windows 11. I didn't download it from any other website. I got Windows 11 after checking for windows update in Settings.

I have just reset my laptop back to Windows 10 version 21H1 and within 10 minutes, it froze again and I had to reboot it. At this point I am completely lost because I don't know what the problem is now.

    Hi.

You said you updated the drivers but you didn't say anything about BIOS updates.

Did you update the BIOS as well ?

    Image

The latest BIOS update is dated 23 August 2019. If you don't have it, I suggest you update the BIOS first. But don't do it within Wİndows. Windows may freeze. Do it from within BIOS if you have the option.

Freezing is also a sign of overheating. Thermal paste between CPU and/or GPU and cooler block may be coming off.

    Hope this helps.

I am currently running the latest BIOS. The one in the picture.

I can say it's not the temperature because I just applied a new paste about 8 months ago. So, the paste is good. Also, a few days ago, I just turned on my laptop for less than 10 mins and I didn't even run any apps or browser. That's why I can say that the temperature is not the culprit here. It immediately locked up and had to force reboot it.

Ok. I'll try that and if it doesn't work, then I'll try to go back to Windows 10 and download windows 11 again and see what happens.
