Update Error in Windows 10 21H1 ( OS Build : 19043.899 )

Problem was fixed with kb5001391.

W.U. from 19043.899 to 19043.962 worked fine without any of the previous errors.

Yes you are right, a similar problem recently with out of band update kb5001649 that was failing with W.U, going from 19042.868 to 19042.870 with error-0x80070541.

But in that case MS released a new update a couple of days later that worked fine with W.U.

Also that one was working fine with the .msu from the catalog, but too many users downloaded the wrong version.  :-)

As for the .msu not many users know where to find it, or end downloading the wrong one :-(

Looks like it is not finishing the installation with the .msu either.

Also trying to install the .cab ends up with the same error0x800f0984. The only way that worked for me from .899 was Update in Place with ISO.

I think you may have misunderstood, yes you are correct using the msu file does not work until you do the in-place upgrade first.

There are many ways around this, with the common denominator being you have to get the device off of .899 before anything takes.

Perhaps your memory better than mine, but did we not go through this about a month or two ago with another "C" or "D" update as well, just don't recall the numbers. Not into digging through this forum to find it.

Welcome to the Insider program, this is what it is all about. MS may have fixed the update issue, but not from the faulty update once installed. You need to do an in-place upgrade via ISO. You retain all data.

Thanks but got it updated a couple days ago.  I don't know how it happened but it worked.  I last tired the old chkdsk/r and went to restart and it updated.  I don't have a clue if the chkdsk helped or not.

Have you even tried the in-place upgrade via ISO from the RP channel. This would take your system to 19043.867 just prior to the bug ridden update of .899 and then WU will update to 19043.928 or you could use the msu file from Microsoft Catalog.

This has worked for myself and many others. You might be waiting forever for MS to get this right. This has all been explained thoroughly in many threads already. You have to get your device off of 19043.899 first for WU to work.

If they do the update in place while online and checking for updates with 19043.867 ISO it will take it up directly to 19043.928.

It even works with the current 20H2 MCT ISO 19042.631, it will get to 19042.928 and then W.U. will download the 21H1 Enablement package and and the latest experience package plus the .NET updates. :-)
