I managed to fix it on my machine. I uninstalled the Security Update for Microsoft Windows KB5041872 and the Feature Enablement for Beta Channel Preview Update KB5037898. After the uninstall I checked for updates, and it downloaded a (repair) update. Once that updated was installed and the PC restarted, checking for updates resulted in once again trying to install the KB5041872 update which managed to pass the 8% mark and fully install within seconds.

I am trying to update the build Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Insider Preview (10.0.26120.1542) (KB5041872).
However, whenever I attempt to download the update, it consistently gets stuck at 8%. When it reaches 8%, the CPU usage by the Windows Modules Installer spikes to 80-90%, causing the PC to become unresponsive and slow. The issue resolves after restarting the PC and pausing the update. However, the problem reappears as soon as I resume the update, making it difficult to use the PC smoothly. I have tried restarting the Windows Modules Installer and Windows update from the systems. But it still is not resolving.

2024-08-27T09:30:42+00:00 I too have been having this problem. I have stopped the windows update service deleted everything in c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution and rebooted the computer. I found that after clearing the SoftwareDistribution folder the download goes to more than 100% complete then restarts the download and gets stuck at 8% and stops there. I have left it running for at least 30 minutes and it sits with the download stuck at 8% complete. I have also run sfc /scannow and DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth in a command prompt window with administrator rights.
Using DISM it shows that my image version is "10.0.26120.1542" is this related to the problem?
So in the end I kill the Windows Modules Installer Worker task and my computer becomes useable, but the download fails! What else can I do to get this update? Should I just pause updates and wait but then if I resume updates, will I then have the same problem?
