Having high CPU usage and lag whenever trying to update WIP "Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Insider Preview (10.0.26120.1542) (KB5041872)" build

I am trying to update the build Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Insider Preview (10.0.26120.1542) (KB5041872).

However, whenever I attempt to download the update, it consistently gets stuck at 8%. When it reaches 8%, the CPU usage by the Windows Modules Installer spikes to 80-90%, causing the PC to become unresponsive and slow. The issue resolves after restarting the PC and pausing the update. However, the problem reappears as soon as I resume the update, making it difficult to use the PC smoothly. I have tried restarting the Windows Modules Installer and Windows update from the systems. But it still is not resolving.

I managed to fix it on my machine. I uninstalled the Security Update for Microsoft Windows KB5041872 and the Feature Enablement for Beta Channel Preview Update KB5037898. After the uninstall I checked for updates, and it downloaded a (repair) update. Once that updated was installed and the PC restarted, checking for updates resulted in once again trying to install the KB5041872 update which managed to pass the 8% mark and fully install within seconds.

It was enough to uninstall the Feature Enablement update for me.

This method however does not attempt to reinstall "Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Insider Preview (10.0.26120.1542) (KB5041872). I faced this exact issue about a month ago and I temporarily fixed it through "Settings>System>Recovery>Fix problems using Windows Update". I initially thought that the troublesome update was resolved and installed, but to my dismay, it appeared again this week.

This time, I followed your method to some success but the experience felt the same as the first method, and I believe this troublesome update will pop up again because it has not been applied. Only the Security Update for KB5041872 will be installed and not the Insider Preview.

I suggest downloading the Windows hide and unhide troubleshooter. A free tool by Microsoft. Just hide the update and it will not appear again in Windows update. Windows hide and unhide troubleshooter Right click and it will download.

Hide the update for what reason?

All you have to do is Pause Updates

until the next build comes out.

The already have the update, the problem

is it's trying to reinstall.
