I was also experiencing the symptom of randomly lost characters across many apps after installing the Technical Preview Update yesterday. On a whim I checked in Windows Update to see if there were any updates. After guessing at missing characters I saw that there was a Defender Update and 2 Technical Preview Updates. I installed those and the system rebooted. Now I can see the "missing" characters. So far, so good.

After installing the upgrade, I had a complete UI failure and had to hit the reset button on my system. After that, everything has been fine so far. I have changed my setting to allow me preview builds on the fast pace rollout.

Where can I get the symbol files for this build (9860)? The system is hanging when my driver is loaded on build 9860 and debugger extensions like !stacks aren't working without symbols.

Is it possible to update the build if it is running on a virtual drive (.vhd)? I received the following message after clicking install: "you cannot install Windows on a virtual drive." I too cannot install the updated build due to this error. I'm not installing this on my actual hard drive.

That fixed the missing characters issue. Bravo. It is, however, somewhat strange that a KB had to be installed with the first download of a new preview that seemed to reinstall the entire system. Thanks Drew!

Is it possible to update the build if it is running on a virtual drive (.vhd)?

I received the following message after clicking install: "you cannot install Windows on a virtual drive."

I too cannot install the updated build due to this error. I'm not installing this on my actual hard drive.
