You will get an update to Windows 10 Technical Preview soon

Perhaps it has something to do with the available space on the disk drive where Windows is installed?

After downloading the preview build from PC settings on my VM (which took almost two hours by the way), and hitting "install now", there was about a five minute pause before a dialog box popped up with a title that translates from Chinese as "Windows needs your help" and mentions that l will need to free up 4.9 GB of disk space on the C: (virtual) to allow the OS to install the new version.

After closing this box the installation continued, but as I had to turn the host computer off as I was going to bed, I put the VM (specific details in my previous post) in a "suspended" state with the update still appearing to be installed. No error code or message appeared at the time.

Has anyone who had this or any similar experience ever got the installation to succeed?

So I'm at home downloading this where I have fast (50 Mbps cable) Internet. After it finishes, I do a search of the C drive for files modified today. I find a folder named "90e20608895b69e99c2e15487a65d780" in windows\softwaredistribution. This folder contains a huge .ESD, an .exe and one other file.

I'm grabbing a copy of that to removable media to take to work tomorrow where I have installed Preview on a few machines, but our Internet is ridiculously slow, less than 3Mbps shared amongst about 40 users. I sure hope it will install after I copy it to those machines. Of course, it would be even better if I could figure out how to load the build into WSUS.

This morning at my office where the slow internet is, I copied the folder back to windows\softwaredistribution\download and went through the "check for new builds" procedure. It saw the file already existing and allowed me to install it.

So if you have the Preview installed on multiple machines, download the new build once instead of on every machine. This was a deal-breaker for me because like Apple, Microsoft is getting in the habit of assuming everyone has an unlimited fast internet connection everywhere they are and that's just not true yet.

I installed the 9860? (latest update) last night. After several reboots, it seems OK. But this morning it stalls on reboot. Ends with a blank screen. Retried several times, no result. This is on a machine that had a fresh install of the original tech preview distribution. Any thoughts?

Update: Since I was left with a useless computer, I decided to re-install the original distribution. Luckily I had downloaded the ISO and burned a DVD. Booting from the DVD, I started the install process. However I was offered an option to remove an (Windows?) update. So I did so and then rebooted. Surprise! I have a functional Tech Preview. Surprisingly it still is running the 9860 version. So I'm not sure what was removed, but I now have a functional WindowsTP installation.

10/23/14 Update: Computer refused to boot again very early this morning. Left with a blank screen with a cursor. Had to repeat the booting from a DVD, choosing the Repair option, Advanced. It removed Preview Update and fixed problem. Still not sure what's going on as the desktop is still labeled the 9860 release.

10/23/14 Update 1: Didn't seem to boot correctly again. Suspect it is related to a video driver problem. Using an older ATI display card. I think I'll have to abandon the evaluation until I can find a solution.

After the update, JPEGs no longer show their thumbnail and just have the generic photo viewer icon.

Tried assigning a different default viewer but get the same.

If I save a JPEG from, say, an e-mail, the thumbnail displays correctly (so new ones display fine, old ones just get the generic thumbnail).

Makes life very difficult.

Otherwise update seems fine so far.
